Family is a Tragic Thing

December 14th, 1985

For the past three months, Bill Weasley and Aspen Malfoy have been perfect. The had the usual classes together: Charms, Potions, Transfiguration, and Herbology.

The Professors all knew of the pair dating and would try to set them up together but for the past week, something has been wrong.

Bill saw Aspen walking and quickly said goodbye to his friend Caleb before cutting across the courtyard and pinning Aspen.

"Bill, let me go," Aspen begged but Bill shook his head.

"Not until you tell me what is wrong. For the past week, you have been ignoring me. What have I done?" Bill whispered and he froze when he saw Aspen crying.

"It's not you Bill! You're perfect while I'm the mess." Aspen cried out and Bill quickly wrapped his arms around Aspen and pulled her into a hug.

"You are not a mess, Aspen. What has happened?"

"I got a letter. From my so-called fathers family." Aspen whispered as she dug in her bag and pulled out a cream envelope and handed it to Bill. He opened it and pulled the equally cream parchment out.

Dearest Aspen,

We are so pleased that you have reached out. As you know Alexander is in Azkaban serving time for supporting the Dark Lord. Your Uncle Lucius has kept us informed of your school work and tells us you are brilliant. But we believe you are old enough to know.

You are not the daughter of Alexander Carrow. Your mother was already two months pregnant when she married my son. Alexander being the kind man he was didn't care but forbade your mother from ever contacting your true father.

I am so sorry this truth has taken so long for you to find out but you deserve the truth. Your Uncle or Aunt should know who your real father is. No matter what Aspen we are still your family. Even if we aren't related by blood.

Have a wonderful school year,

Grandmama Carrow

Bill looked up from the letter and saw Aspen shaking her head.

"I never wanted to believe any word that Roberto said. I always thought it was a lie." Aspen whispered as Bill folded the letter and shoved it into his bag.

"She was right. You needed to know the truth." Bill said and Aspen let out a bitter laugh.

"Can I ask you something?" Aspen whispered and Bill cracked a lazy grin.

"You always do. Go ahead."

"Do you think we'll ever find happiness?"

Bill stared at Aspen for a moment before nodding.

"With each other hell yes!" Bill said as he picked up Aspen and spun her around earning the young fifteen-year-old girl to let out a laugh.

"Bill! Put me down! I'm gonna hurl!" Aspen cried out with laughter before Bill set her safely on her feet.

"There, I did my job. I made you happy again." Bill said and Aspen cracked a smile before shaking her head.

"I knew my entire life I wasn't a Carrow. I never had the last name and none of them ever came looking for me." Aspen said as she sat down on the bench and Bill joined her.

"Do you think your Uncle knew?"

"Yes, my aunt did as well. When I go back home I'm going to ask him to tell me who he is so maybe I can meet him."

"Do you want to?" Bill asked and Aspen stared at him for a moment before nodding.

"I think I do, my mum loved him enough to have me. I mean there is an old wives tale. A girl is made out of love and boys are made out of lust." Aspen explained and Bill chuckled.

"I could go with you if you want to. Because whoever your dad is wasn't smart because he never went looking for you."

"I am pretty amazing aren't I?" Aspen asked and Bill rolled his eyes before he pulled Aspen into a hug.

"Everything is going to be alright. Sometimes family can be a tragic thing." He whispered and Aspen leaned against him and smiled.

"With you with me, everything will be alright."
