Lucius Malfoy was awoken with a start when he saw a phoenix standing above his bed. He had graduated from Hogwarts two months ago and was due to marry Narcissa Black in one month.
He sat up and took the note from the phoenix's mouth.
Dear Lucius,
It pains me to write that your sister Roxanne was killed during an Auror raid last night. Your niece, Aspen, is now left without any parents. Meaning Aspen would go to you. I will be stopping by to bring you, Aspen, later this afternoon.
Albus Dumbledore
Lucius stared at the letter before he broke down into tears. Roxanne Elizabeth Malfoy was his eldest sister and the only person who knew how to control him. She was dead?
Now Lucius would have to raise his tiny niece Aspen all by himself.
Aspen, she looked so much like her mother. Ice blonde hair and bright blue eyes. Lucius looked over and saw it was ten in the morning. He flung the covers off his body before summoning his elf Moog.
"Master Malfoy."
"Moog, I need you to go bring up the old baby things from the basement. Aspen is going to be living here from now on." He said and Moog's eyes welled up.
"Mistress Roxanne?"
"Has passed. I get Aspen now. Do as I say and get those baby things and put them in the room beside me. Then wake up Narcissa." Lucius ordered before he changed into a black suit and walked to the yellow sitting room.
He paced back and forth until the fireplace lit up and out stepped Albus Dumbledore and in his arms was his niece.
"Aspen!" Lucius said as he rushed over and took the little girl out of Dumbledore's arms and held her close. Aspen stared at her uncle before her mouth quivered and she let out a horrible cry.
Lucius quickly rocked his niece the way he was taught by Roxanne and she quieted down.
"You and she will learn with one another. I am sure Narcissa will help." Dumbledore said and Lucius stared at his old headmaster.
"Who killed her?" Was the only question that pondered his mind after he read the letter.
"The dark mark was left in the sky Lucius. Please do not worry about that right now. Worry about burying your sister and preparing for your wedding." He said as he walked over and placed his hand on Aspen's head.
"She is very lucky to have an uncle to take her in. I wrote to her father but he has fled to America."
Lucius Malfoy's brother in law was Alexander Carrow. A coward who thought his sister failed when giving birth to a girl first.
"She doesn't need him. She has us." A cool voice said and Lucius looked up to see his fiance Narcissa Black walking into the silver sitting room. She took Aspen out of Lucius' arms and smiled at her niece.
"Same thing I said. Good luck to you both." Dumbledore said as he nodded his head and stepped back into the fireplace.
"How will we raise her when we are still children?" Lucius asked when the flames died down.
"We learn as we go. She will understand." Narcissa said before they looked down at the now sleeping girl.
"I will honor Roxanne by doing what our parents did not do with us."
