San's POV

I thought my hand was about to shatter, with how hard Shift was crushing it.

Shift let out a scream as the child was born.

"It's a boy!" the doctor announced.

Shaking and nursing my hand, I took him in my arms.

He looked mostly human, though his skin was pale and a ribcage like pattern was on his chest.

The thing that really made me connect with him, the thing that made me want to hold him tight and never let go, was his eyes.

His skin was pulled deep into his eye sockets, leaving two large pits of blackness. Call me crazy, but I felt like I saw a bit of G in those eyes.

The natural curiosity and knowledge.

He was perfect.

I handed him to Shift, who was lying in the hospital bed. She smiled. "H-hi." she said, breathless.

"What are you naming him?" the doctor asked.

"Caveat." we said simultaneously.

What we didn't expect, however, was how quickly he'd develop.

By just two months he had already said his first word. Best day of my life.

-Flashback-

"Nyeh heh heh! Do you like playing with your uncle Papyrus?" Paps and Caveat were rolling a ball back and forth between them.

Shift and I smirked. "Wow. he must really tickle your funny bone, huh Paps?"

Papyrus jumped up, staring me down. "No puns. Please!"

Then Caveat said his first word. "Pun!"

I was so proud.

"Nyoh hoh hoh! The great Papyrus was too late to protect the child from the evil puns!" Papyrus was heartbroken.

Caveat started clapping his hands at the performance Paps was giving.

"Pun! Pun!" he threw the ball at Paps, laughing.

Later that day, we found out Frisk was in the hospital with a baby of her own, so we decided to drop by.

>time skip<

"Knock knock!" Shift said, opening the door.

Frisk chuckled, holding her kid. "Who's there?"

Shift rolled her eyes. "Wasn't a knock-knock joke, Frisk. Just didn't want to scare you."

I walked over, carrying Caveat in my arms.

"What's their name?" I asked Asriel. he was standing in the corner, looking like he was trying to figure out how the !%$# to be a parent.

"Melody. What do you think of the name?" He stammered.

She definitely looked like her parents. she looked mostly human, other than the two spots on her head where her horns would probably one day grow.

Caveat made a little noise and reached towards her.

Cautiously I lowered him to the same level as Melody.

Caveat grabbed a fold of the blanket she was in that had come loose and put it back on her shoulder. He made a small satisfied noise, a sign that he was done.

Frisk stared. "Caveat is only two months old, right?"

Stunned at what he'd done, I simply nodded.

"Being a fast learner runs in his family." Shift explained, trying to make sense of it.

I nodded. This kid never ceases to amaze me.
