Shift's POV

Arriving in Temmie Village, I saw Frisk exit a small cave. She waved me over to talk.

"Hi Shift! What's up? You were talking with Undyne for a while!"

Quietly I replied it was nothing. I was puzzling over how to ask her when Frisk shook me around.

"You okay? You're looking a little sick." I sat down on the ground.

"Frisk, when you do a Genocide run, do you ever... hesitate to kill someone? There's gotta be something that makes you regret it, or you would never stop." I asked her as she sat down next to me. Frisk sighed.

"Yeah, There's someone at the very end who I just... wish I could spare them. Every time, they put their trust and faith in me, and every time, I betray them. I try to let them speak, at least, but Chara slaughters them, just to get to the next world faster, where maybe I would do a pacifist run, and they don't have to see anyone else die. I just wish that I could help that person, because I really care about them. Immediately after, though, I just reset. Whatever Chara's idea is, I don't want to know." She said.

"Oh..." My heart sank. Who could she be talking about but Sans?

I tried to hold back my tears as she asked me why I had asked her that.

"I just wondered If you truly regret the Genocide. I guess you do." I lied, getting up.

Frisk hopped up and started following me to Hotland.

San's POV

My thoughts swirled about my skull as I tried to understand these feelings. Why did I care so much that she was upset about something?

Why did the thought of Shift getting hurt make me so upset?

Because you care for her, Sans.

I looked around, before remembering it was G talking to me from the void.

I do not! I thought indignantly.

I see more than you do, my son. Fighting alongside her, bonding over the Genocide runs, It was practically inevitable.

I tried to push G's voice out of my head, but It just got louder.

Come on, Sans. You feel it in your soul, Don't you? The wish to be with her? The need to protect her? I swear, Sans, you must stop trying to silence your feelings. Papyrus was very hurt that you didn't tell him about the timelines.

Stop.

Whenever there's a genocide run, you don't even try to stop Papyrus' death.

Stop. Now.

Why? Because you feel like you can't afford to care anymore. Your brother, however, even knowing of the timelines, continues to try, continues to care.

I said stop.

No! When will you accept that hiding yourself away is a mistake! If you would just open up, you have countless friends who'd support you. But you just shut them out.

Please, G, stop...

Let them into your struggles. They can help! And if you deny the feelings you have for Shift, you might lose her. And what would you do if you did? You know you would do anything to try to get her back, just to try to stop yourself from feeling the pain. Why would you let that happen to yourself?

"I said stop!" I yelled out. A passing Pyrope looked at me, concerned. It shrugged it off as me being crazy and went on its way.

I sat at my hotdog stand, G's voice echoing in my mind.

"Sans!" Frisk and Shift ran over to me. I gave them a small wave as Frisk came up to the stand.

"I've emptied out my inventory Sans. This time you're actually going to give me a real hotdog, not a water sausage." Frisk said, slightly irritated.

I decided to just humor them and gave them some actual food. I wasn't really paying attention to Frisk though. I was looking at Shift.

She looked on the verge of tears.

Something in my soul snapped.

&?%#.

I couldn't deny it, I cared about her a lot.

"Hey Shift! You okay?" I asked, trying not to blush as I started to realize just how much she meant to me.

She gave a small nod and started looking around. I knew something must be hurting her. I looked at Frisk suspiciously, but they were busy eating the hot dog.

I wanted more than anything to hold Shift close and help her with whatever she was struggling with, but I couldn't. She probably didn't like me the same way.

Instead, I simply offered her a hot dog, on the house.

Without a word, she accepted. I quickly told them I had to go. Frisk paid for her food and I took a shortcut to the long elevator.

I knew I could just teleport to the hallway, but I wanted time to think this over. I stepped into the elevator, trying to think about what to do.

I actually like her. A lot. I don't know what to do.

G's voice floated through my cranium as he chuckled. "What do think you should do, Sans?"

I thought about it. Living in the same house as her would be a lot more awkward now. I should ask Asgore what to do. He'd want to know about someone being interested in his daughter, at any rate.

I tried to think of ways to start the conversation as the painfully long elevator rose towards New Home.

It finally stopped. I stepped out, walking to the throne room

Asgore was standing there. He seemed to be trying to ready himself to fight the human.

I tapped his shoulder. (no, i'm not fixing this. it's too funny. read the comments.)

He turned. "Ah, Sans? How are you?" he asked pleasantly.

Nervously, I told him about my feelings for Shift. Asgore was beaming.

"Well, Sans, I fully approve! How are you going to tell her?"

I quietly answered that I didn't know if I was going to tell her.

Asgore frowned. He told me I had to tell her, or I would never know.

"Trust me, I hesitated to tell Tori..." he blinked a tear out of his eye.

"She laughed, and asked me 'What took you so long?' She always was funny."

I gave him a pat on the shoulder as he recalled his times with his wife, before taking my leave.
