Maxon can't leave the hospital until tomorrow. It's not a long wait, but it feels like centuries. I claim the bed next to him and bring down some pillows and blankets from our room. I also bring down our wedding picture and a picture he took of the twins' birth. Maxon smiled when he saw the photos. I was glad that he didn't start crying. I still sat beside him all night, as he did for me. I stroked his hair, delivered his pain medicine, and told the doctors when anything was wrong. Nothing should have gone wrong.
But it did.
The next morning, I awoke to a violent beeping noise. I jumped out of bed and looked at the monitor. His heart rate was slowing rapidly. The doctors and nurses rushed in with needles and more equipment I didn't recognize. I felt the gentle hands of a nurse pulling me away.
"No!" I screamed, "He's my husband! Let me see him!"
"You won't want to see this, Your Majesty. It's very bloody."
"Tell me what's happening to him!" I screamed, fresh tears streaming down my face.
"There's a piece of glass near his heart, and last night, a piece of equipment helping his blood flow was disabled. We believe-"
"Oh my god. I unhooked it." I whispered, barely audible. I had slept next to him, stroked his hair, and moved the sheets for his comfort...
"No, Your Majesty, it was disabled through a computer. We believe- someone broke in. I would check if anything is stolen."
I start hyperventilating.
"Your Majesty, deep breaths," she said
"What about my children?!" I shriek.
"They were under the care of General Leger and Mrs. Leger."
I begin running to their bedrooms one by one. My tears run off my face. Now I have to be a mother. I find them in Aspen's room playing Go Fish. Their faces indicate they are unaware of the circumstances. Eadlyn takes one look at me and knows something is wrong.
I take my children to the hospital ward, Aspen following close behind.
"America- I mean, Your Majesty- what's wrong?"
"It's Maxon," I whisper, and break into a sprint, holding hands with Eadlyn and Kaden, with Ahren holding onto Eadlyn's other hand.
Once we arrive, the nurse who explained everything to me asked us to check if any jewelry I was wearing last night is gone. I place my hand on my neck and discover the absence of my necklace. I say, "My necklace. It's gone."
I then look down at my hand and see that my ring is still there.
"For whatever reason, the thief tries to kill my husband-" I mentally finish the sentence, and maybe has succeeded, "And doesn't take my wedding band."
Aspen Immediately runs to get his guards and they leave to search the palace and the town. But Aspen comes back.
