I pretended defeat, slouching my head so that my curls covered my activity. I place my hand in my bag, rummage for a moment, and pull out what I was looking for.

I raise the gun up to his head.

"Tell me," I said menacingly, "What you did to my husband. The truth this time."

August puts his hands up. "Stop, America, you know this isn't the answer-"

"YOU WON'T TELL ME THE TRUTH!" I scream. The china teacups on the table rattle from the noise.

I lower the gun.

"You're right," I say, calculating. I raise the gun up to the ceiling. "You would sacrifice yourself for your family. There is no chance you can sacrifice now. Answer or I pull the trigger."

"America, please." He begs.

"One...

"Two-" I count.

"OKAY!" He caves in. "I did it. Please, don't hurt my family."

"Why?" I ask, "You didn't get what you wanted? That's it?"

That's what I'm doing. I realize. Trying to kill him for Maxon.

But Maxon would do the same. He would save me.

I lower the gun to meet August's face.

"You shouldn't have pulled that little stunt."

I pull the trigger.
