"Almost there... Got it!" Thomas said as he placed the last of the candles in its designated place.
The brunette had spent hours here in this little treehouse, getting everything ready for his and Newt's— well he wasn't sure if it was a date but regardless, he considered it a chance of a date. He wanted to show the blonde that he wasn't the person that was rude and obnoxious anymore. He wanted to show him that their relationship deserves a second chance.
"Thomas? Oh wow." he hears, turning around to see Newt.
The blonde was absolutely gobsmacked. He couldn't believe all the effort that Thomas had gone through, just for this date...or not date - Newt wasn't sure either. Seeing all the lit candles scattered all around the room, fairy lights dangling from the ceiling, Newt was in awe. It was absolutely beautiful.
"Tommy, you didn't have to do all this."
"For you, I would give the world."
"My god, that was soo cheesy." the blonde laughs as he follows the brunette down to a layout of blankets, sitting down next to him.
The boys spent the first few hours talking and laughing, just like old times. Newt didn't want to accept it soo quickly but he could tell that the version of Thomas from before wasn't the real Thomas. This was the real him; bundled up in blankets while stuffing his face with Pringles. That's the Thomas Newt fell in love with and he was over the moon that he had got him back.
"I want to do something." the brunette says, putting aside the snacks and pulling out a book.
"I remember you giving me this when we first met and I was reading—"
"You still read it?" the British boy asks, a wide smile plastered across his face.
"Of course. It was from you, how couldn't I? Anyway, I came across this one poem and I wanted to read it to you." Newt nods as he lets Thomas read the words from the book that they both love so dearly.
"You are beautiful. You are powerful. You are rare. You are grand. You are majestic. Your broken is a gift, the pain will make you stronger. Keep fighting, continue to survive. I'll fight beside you."
Those words hit Newt right in the heart. He remembered reading that page every night for a sense of hope, proving that he was able to get through all this. The fact that Thomas knew that it was the right one to read - Newt didn't know what to think. He had always been searching for that person that would stick by him, will fight with him to the ends of the earth. He thought that it was Thomas, maybe he should reconsider that idea.
"I want to be that person fighting for you, Newt. I'm sorry I wasn't it before but I promise, here on out, I will be. Because you are the greatest gift that I have ever received." Thomas sighed, scooching closer to the blonde.
Thomas did mean every word. Newt meant the world— no the universe to him and he wanted to make sure that he got him back. But he knew that he needed to do this on Newt's terms. He couldn't be selfish, all he wanted was for him and Newt to be in the best relationship that they could be in.
Their faces only inches away from each other, the two boys felt that their emotions were all over the place. They didn't even notice that their hands were intertwined like a couple of ribbons but they left it to be, they both were solely focused on one another. Newt finally felt at ease with Thomas, like he didn't have to pretend or hide anything away from him anymore. He was finally comfortable. Thomas almost felt like he was going to burst full of love as he was just so happy that he was finally able to get to this moment, where he and Newt could finally be okay with one another. Both of them crept closer, their lips almost touching. Thomas' hand had rested itself on Newt's thigh, Newt's hand on the brunette's cheek.
They were almost there.
The blonde was nervous, he had kissed Thomas before but why now, when their lips are millimetres away, was he freezing up? The other boy was so excited that he needed to hold himself back, to stop himself from practically pouching on Newt.
They were soo close.
And suddenly, they both acted as if it never happened.
