It was pretty easy to sneak past the crowds outside the school, parents flooding in to steal their children away from the chaos of the news vans and sketchy cars pulling up around the crime scene. There were dark suited people with cameras blown up in their faces around the outside of the square. I rolled my eyes into the back of my head and continued alone down the sidewalk, trying to ignore the van obviously etched with the logo of The Daily Bugle.
I simply clutched my sketchbook to my chest and continued on down the street towards the subway in as inconspicuous a way as possible.
"Hey, kid!" Someones feet began to pound on the ground one two one running up behind me. I let out a heavy sight, turning to them.
"Can I help you?" A middle aged guy in a sweats and tennis shoes shoved a camera up in my face. His blond hair hung dirty in front of his eyes as he looked at me.
"What do you know about attack on your school?" He huffed in a heavy German accent. I raised a brow and frowned.
"How do you know I go there?" I pointed over at Midtown."I could be from the other side of town. Just here to see the commotion just like you, or maybe I'm a street urchin who could sucker punch your lights out at any second. The point is you don't know." His face fell a bit.
"Uh. I just, well, do you?" He muttered, lowering the camera and putting a hand inside his pocket.
"Okay, yeah, but I don't like cameras shoved up my nose dude. Pretty sure no one does."
"Will you tell me what happened?" He asked slightly giddy as I scolded myself for being a good person.
"All I know is that some flying rock shot down some snipers who tried to kill us during the fire drill. Happy? Now go away." He grinned widely and nodded his head viciously. I turned my head and continued on to the subway just a couple of blocks away.
I kept my head down, inconsiderate people with no lives of their own shoving into me, flocking to the scene. Eventually the sirens stopped wailing and the people stopped flooding and I found myself still outside the subway entrance.
Why won't you go home.
I knew why, but like always didn't want to admit it. I would be alone and I knew it. So instead my feet began to make their way down to the other side of town. The world thrust itself into my eyes, the sky the birds the people and bustle all there but different from how you know it. These people had purpose, sad but strong and they were fighters. It wasn't what is in the pictures, or the reports. It was real and human, unlike most of my world up to this point.
Life was beautiful in whole, looking at the broad picture and ignoring the pinpricks. The man forcefully holding his wife's arm as she hid her look of fear. The stray dogs licking at ankles and getting a sharp kick in the side in return. Homeless people begging for change to receive a cigarette butt instead. Life was cruel when you looked beyond the surface.
Why would it be this way?
I sighed, tucking my sketch pad under my arm so I could pop in my black lair of headphones and listen to a playlist while ignoring my feelings and depressing thoughts. Your typical teen things.
I pushed in the button on the side of my MP3 and let the recording of Owl City's Alligator Sky roll over my eardrums.
Where was I when the rockets came to life,
And carried you away into the alligator sky?
Even though I'll never know what's up ahead,
I'm never letting go, I'm never letting goI bent down a bit, sticking out a hand for the little pooch to sniff and giving him a scratch between the ears. He looked grateful as I pulled a stick from his fur and tossed it over by a garbage bin. He wagged his tail appreciatively as I stood up and waved him a goodbye before continuing down the sidewalk. I glanced over the shops, spotting a small coffee joint over on the other side of the street. I grinned slightly to myself, looking back and forth before sprinting the length in a couple of quick strides.
