"Rae!" I raised a brow at the call from down the way. It wasn't immediate but I clearly could identify the flustered voice with that of Ned soon matching it to his blotched face.
"You doing okay?" I asked, wrapping a hand around my backpack strap and cooking my neck so I could look down at him.
He wheezed a couple of times, holding up a single finger to signal for me to wait. I obliged, but unhappily as my train would pull up any moment and more than likely I would miss it because of his antics. "Look." Was all he said, standing up straight while still straining for breath. I grabbed his phone from the outstretched hand and began to read through the article plastered on its screen.
I grinned slightly, eyes wide as I looked over the article written by my mother on the school attack just a few days ago.
"...The unknown hero supposedly saved the lives of two students, Peter Parker and Rachel Maddix who were safely found in the aftermath of the situation." I looked back up at Ned who was bouncing back and forth on his feet in glee. "So what?"
"So what!?" He threw down his hands, frustration seeping off his skin. "You two are famous! A bunch of people have been getting in contact with the paper wanting to hear from the two of you. You're the only ones who really saw Shock Wave up close and personal!" He waved around his hands dramatically to improve his point. I sighed, running my fingers through my hair and laughing a bit. Me, famous? It was kind of ridiculous considering that I was the person who apparently saved my own life, of course no one knew that but me and my mother.
"Whatever you say Ned.. but as far as I'm concerned I am not interesting enough to be included in all of the news coverage." He frowned, putting a hand on my shoulder and looking deep down into what I think might have been my soul.
"You are an important and beautiful being." I raised my eyebrows in a bit of a startled motion as his dark irises loomed in my own. "Say it." He stated, words precise and crisp as he shook me back and forth a bit. I blew out a small chuckle and shook a loose piece of hair down into my face.
"You are an important and beautiful being. Now that we have that under wraps-"
"NO. YOU are an important and beautiful being!" He was basically belting it out now, the hawaiian shirt he wore flapping around him like a cape as the next train rolled into the station. I laughed, putting my hands on his outstretched arms and sucking in a full breath.
"I am an important and beautiful being." I giggled out. Ned nodded his head hard causing a group of tourists to stare at us and look on in confusion.
"Louder!" He shouted, raising his hands to the sky and pumping a fist into the stale air.
I continued to laugh, mimicking his hand movements and shouting my bit to the concrete ceiling. My voice rang out in the space, letting me hear my own confident song of praise.
"I am an important and beautiful being!" He cried.
"I AM AN IMPORTANT AND BEAUTIFUL BEING!!" And with that incoherent chant drifting around us, the mantra ringing from our lips time and time again, I felt really and honestly great. For one of the first times in my life, or at least recently, I didn't feel like everyone in the world saw an empty useless shell of a teen, but someone who was confident and currently didn't give a who was staring at her while she wildly whooped and hollered at the top of her lungs to a new close friend in the musty cement hallway under the roads of New York City.
