The world was dark. It was always so dark when you were in a dream. But this time was it? Or was it past. All I could see was his red, tired, scared face. I could see Peter. And he was looking at me too. I must be dead, there was no way around it. It was impossible.

I lost.

"So this is death." I muttered to the dark empty space. No one responded, there was no echo. It was pitch black outside me. I was it. I was all that was her in a big wide hole. "I never knew what this would be like. But I guess I should say sorry big guy. I forked up. I killed people. I swore a lot, stole my moms favorite red lipstick that one time. Never gave Ned his ten dollars back. I did a lot of bad shit, so I get the never ending nothing mess. Sorry god. My bad." I mumbled out the small confession, not really knowing what else to do.

"Can I at least have a deck of cards or something?" I asked, hoping someone out there had pity on me floating in the endless abyss.

"I'll do you one better, how would you like to live?" My eyes bulged.

"Woah, I thought I was, you know, eternal time out or something." I turned a couple of times before the figure appeared in front of me. They were a genderless being with a bald head, yellow and orange monk clothes and a knowing grin.

"I am the ancient one." The being said.  I raised an eyebrow.

"That's not very catchy." I muttered, the being summoning a short table and a teapot to my black pit.

"Yes, I suppose your right." They said pouring two cups of tea and handing one over to me. "So, why do you think you are here?" The ancient one asked, raising a naked eyebrow.

"I dunno. I wasn't horrible in life, so I guess I earned a mid ground. Avoid torture but be alone fore eternitu type of chiz." They laughed slightly, taking a sip of the tea and setting it back down on the table.

"Not exactly. You are not dead, not yet exactly. Now is a time of choice, of looking back, of deciding whether you are ready to leave for the after life." They raised a hand to their left, a sparkling copper circle appearing and showing a beautiful paradise on the other side. "Or to continue on the life you have made." To their right another formed, looking down on my grey body as a man in scrubs pounded on my chest doing CPR.

"Why do I get to choose?" I murmured, looking at myself and all the pain I had endured.

"Because there is something left for you in that world." The ancient one said. Their voice was kind but I could tell there was a catch. There was always a catch.

"And what if I choose to live again?"

They pursued their lips. "Then when you return here, I will not be waiting, and you're after life may not be so desirable." I looked to her left, at the field of flowers and the hill leading to a tree. It held fresh oranges and a man stood there waiting for me.

It was my father.

"This.. this is impossible, how am I supposed to choose!" I shouted. The ancient one did not move.

"That is not up for me to decide." They said, the circles shrinking ever so slightly

"No! Wait! I need more time, Dad!" My hands flew to the sides of my head, pulling my hair as my eyes watered.

"No, Rae, don't quit on me like this!" Peter's voice echoed from real life, his body now hunched over mine as I flatlined.

"I-" they were nearly gone now, and my body decided for me, charging at the window and shoving myself through.

"I'm sorry."
