I bit my bottom lip as the night sky sparked around me. The suit was a little hot tonight, the fact that it was mid November not meaning anything to my sweating neck. I huffed, looking down at the sidewalks below me and listening to the radio close to my ear for any sort of disturbances in the night. But even as I knew what I was supposed to be doing, patrolling the streets yadda yadda, all important things, I couldn't get Rachel out of my head.
My shoulder burned just thinking about her, the bruise on fire but in a good way from the other night. How on earth had she gotten me off guard, sure I wasnt giving her my all, but then she would have had no chance at all.
Or would she..
I shrugged, mind rolling to her lavender curls cupping her carmel skin, the dash of freckles splattered on her cheeks just like a true artists. The way she kept pencils in her hair and the paint always laced into her clothing. The endearing way that she wrinkled her nose, laughing whole heartedly when I made a bad joke.
Something about her, all together, I just couldn't get her out of my head. Suddenly, my fingers began to twitch, brain whispering to itself. Someones here.
"Hi there Spider-Man, out on a midnight stroll?" I glanced over my shoulder, Tony Stark standing there in full aromor just behind me.
"Oh, you know me. Always on the look out. Nice to see you Mister Stark." He chuckled a little, the suit giving way as he stepped out from inside it to join me on the buildings ledge. I moved from my crouched position to sit as he dangled his legs over the edge.
"I've been needing to talk to you Peter, there's been a lot of talk about that caped super, Shockwave, that came by your school a while back. I believe you remember since I saw you hiding around on tape watching the event go on." He glanced over at me as I pulled of my mask to get some fresh air.
"Oh yeah, I remember that trust me."
"Good," he directed his head back out over the landscape of buildings and roadways, "We think you can help us get in touch with them, me and some of the guys upstairs, because this Shockwave, if I'm not mistaken, is on the run from some pretty bad people." He dug down in his pocket and handed over to me a photograph Imediatly my heart jumped up my throat. "She goes by Rachel Jamie Maddix, I tracked her from Nevada. A group of so called scientists are hunting her down for her special geological powers. Maybe you know her?"
I nodded a couple of times, trying not to be sick. He put a hand on my shoulder, leaning in slightly. "You okay Peter."
I bit the inside of my lip, a small taste of blood flooding my tounge. "Yeah, I know her. I- I can- I can get you a moment. Tomorrow, nine thirty ish, Meet me at my apartment, May should be out.." He glanced over at me for a second before jumping up from his spot on the ground, strutting over to his suit as this bomb lay heavy and ticking inside my chest.
"I'll see you then, and kid?" I looked over ears roaring as I pulled the mask back over my face. "Don't do anything stupid." With those few words of let's say encouragement he shot of quietly into the night.
The cars below me sped and honked their horns, my mind silent but for only one thought.
Look.
With my eyes straight forward, my fingers unfolded the picture, flattened it and held it still. I pinched shut my eyes, not knowing what else to do. What would I see in this picture, who was it I would be looking at. Tony Starks words ripped the my mind, Goes by. I didn't even know her name, would I want to see a different face too? So much was wrong with this, so much swirling in my head.
My eyes peeled open, a girl around the age of 12 looking back at me. Her hair was short and blond, eyes deep green and skin lighter, the freckles gone. Her smile was lighter too, everything so different but the crinkle that ran up her nose as her mocking look of joy stared back at me.
The picture dropped from my hands, floating down to the street below as my eyes filled with heavy tears, ones I had no clue where they came from. My body had control of it's own, swinging around and pounding my fists into the cement as the lie really bloomed in my head.
I had fallen in love with someone who didn't even exist. My heart ached, not knowing what I had been feeling for her till now. Till everything was different and nothing was really true.
A web of lies wrapped around me as her laugh echoed softly in my ears, and The Spider-Man began to cry.
