Knock Knock

I rose the next morning to the insistent beeping of my alarm clock, one of the few things I had managed to unpack after cleaning out and bandaging my neck last night. It read five thirty as I rolled over, staring blankly up at the popcorn ceiling of the apartment. My neck was stiff from sleeping so still last night, the purple and yellowing hues of my arms were throbbing as well in the early hours of the morning. I sighed, forcing myself into an upright position on the frameless mattress. I glanced at the box across from me, the blue flannel Peter had brought me last night neatly folded and place ontop.

A small smile crept onto my face as I leaned forward and picked it up, plopping it simply down on my lap and letting myself think about last night for just a moment.

"Rae!" My skin crawled and heart jumped with fear. My mom had called my name up the stairs from the first floor. "Are you awake?" She continued. My mind raced quickly, fearful thoughts racing around my head. I panicked, grabbing the shirt and throwing it on over myself to hide the bruises on my arms and the large bandage around the side of my neck.

"Yeah Ma, I'm up!" She shoved her head in the doorway, hair flipping across her eyes as I crossed my arms protectively over my chest. She grinned ear to ear and moved out of my view once again.

"Just wanted to make sure you were up before I left hun, have a good day at school, and baby?" I tilted my head back and closed my eyes hard.

"Yeah momma?"

"Tell me next time you plan on making an appearance okay?" I snorted slightly, nodding my head even though she couldn't see me.

"Yes ma'am will do, now get out of here will you?" Not a second later the door slammed in her wake as she rushed out of the apartment to work.

I blew out a soft breath, hunching over in the button up that was at least two sizes too big for me, swallowing me and my worries whole. I sat there still and silent for a moment as the sound of cars and people passing by echoed outside my window pane. I sucked in a quick breath from my nose, pushing myself up off the bed and inspecting the torn apart yet empty room around myself.

My fingers, swallowed by the sleeves of the shirt, made their way up to my hair, pulling it back and doing a ponytail ontop of my head with a hair tie from the ground. As I glanced in the mirror at myself, still in my clothes from the day before and wrinkled to no tomorrow, but it would have to make do. I began to prepare myself for school when..

Knock knock knock! I spun around, eyebrows raised with my toothbrush dangling out of my mouth.

"Just a minute!" I called, pulling on a pair of pants and running down the stairs. My teeth clenched down on the brush as I did so, not wanting it to fall out. Another round if knocks came from the front door as I skid in front of it and yanked it open.

"What!" I called, pulling the door open to a pair of teenage boys holding in a snicker at my current appearance. "Oh god..." I pulled the brush out of my mouth and attempted to cover my bright pink fluffy slippers with the door, "What on earth are you two, Peter!" I stared at him angrily as Ned finally let out a strangled laugh. Angrily, I ushered the pair into the apartment, slamming the door quite hastily in their wake.

"We wanted to-" Peter began, Ned throwing his hands up and interupting.

"Peter. Peter wanted to." He scolded, looking at me with the most mechivious grin I had ever seen.

"Sure he did, what were you saying Parker?" I grinned, kicking off my shoes in a corner and continuing to brush my teeth over the kitchen sink.

Ned looked quite offended as Peter gripped his bag straps. "We wanted to walk with you to school, you know, so you didn't have to go alone." My heart dropped a little, feeling thankful but also a little resentful at the sentement. Plus the fact that I hadn't been worried about that particular fact till then.

I spit out my mouthful of foam and looked over at the boys, not sure what to think. "Thanks. I'll run up and finish getting dressed. You two stay put." I turned, bouncing up the first few steps before turning back and dead glaring at Ned. "And don't even think about following me."

"So, I heard some rumors about that Shock Wave hero, and guess what?" MJ shoved herself down between me and Ned, whipping out her phone and grinning mischeviously, "I have video evidence!" It was lunch time, Peter Ned and I had been seated outside until MJ had come up and joined us.

She hovered her thumb over the play button for just a moment, giving us all a chance to be looking at the screen before she started the recording. I bit my lip slightly as the shakey footage zoomed in on the floating rock, a clocked figure standing there in black brown and purple moving fabric and quite obviously, breasts. The figure, also known as me, raised their arms, shoving forward their fists and sending chunks of molten rock at their target from the one they stood on.

"Yeah, this got posted on the Daily Bugle this morning. You know.." she scrolled down, putting her hand under her chin and resting it there. "The lady who took the video, she has your last name Rae. Didn't you say your mom works there?"

I took a quick sip of my water as Peter's glance became a little more interested. "Uh, yeah. That's why we moved here actually, superheros and junk. Guess she got what she was looking for." Ned scoffed a little, getting up and moving around to the other side of the table to get a better look.

"Superheros and junk? Their literally the coolest thing ever when someones not trying to kill you. There has to be something that you like about them?" I rolled my eyes at him as he sat there, mouth hanging open.

"I mean, all they do is go around, stopping large disruptions that could be handled by the police or were created by themselves. Their only in it to make the front page. Well, most of them." I muttered the last part, shrugging and leaning into Peter's side a little. I glanced over to see his face glowing pink.

"Most of them??" He pressed, shoving himself forward until MJ pushed him back with her pointer finger. I laughed a little, picking up my shoulders and leaning across the table.

"Well, Spider-Man. He's a good guy! Saves the little people, dosnt just wait for the aliens and warfare to take a stand. He does his best to help all the time." I smirked a little, looking down at my arms thinking about the night before.

"Ooh, I get it, you like him don't you? Something about the spandex, I get it!" MJ nudged me, causing me to lean into Peter once again. I chuckled, bumping her back as I did so.

"You caught me MJ, something about a spandex covered boy just makes me want to punch 69 into my calculator all day long. Now let's get going, the bells gonna ring soon.

With that MJ and I rose, carrying our trays to the garbage leaving the boys behind. "But seriously, do you have a thing for him." She muttered into my ear as we headed to our mutual 5th period.

"Well, I've met him, and he's quite the charmer, but I have to say.." my mind couldn't help but wonder my finger up the returned button up around my shoulders. "I think someone else got there first."

"Wait.. are you talking about..." she trailed off, looking back over her shoulder at Peter. "Well, I have to say you have good taste." She muttered as we hurried into the class just down the hall as the bell set off behind us.

"Hey, I never specified who it was." My mind was flooded with his image from just the night before. How short a period of time I had known him and it already felt like forever. "But you say anything, and I will send the Illuminati after you."
