Peter had invited me over to his house, the two of us nested in his bedroom.
"Alright, I've got a game, let's play questions. I'll ask something, you answer and then you get to ask me two questions." He grinned and snickered.
"That just sounds like a conversation to me." He retorted, spinning around in his chair.
"Yes, a conversation, but you get twice as many details as I do which sounds like a good deal to me. You can ask anything too, same for me." He laughed, playing with a piece of string that hung off his jacket.
"Alright, fine, shoot." I pumped my fists, racking my brain as well for a good starter question.
"Um, favorite superhero?" He let out a dramatic ha, my eyes rolling to the back of my head at the cockiness.
"Easy, Iron Man. Tony Stark is a genius and he has done some extremely impressive things. Not to mention the fact that he has an entire industry designed to revolutionize the world!" I could see he meant every word he said as he flounced around like a schoolgirl with a crush.
"So I guess it's my turn?" He looked at me with a little grin. I snickered a bit at his cute screwed up little face. "How about a sentimental object."
"I know exactly, give me a moment.. I've gotta- ooh!" I let out a small enigmatic yelp as I gripped my fingers around the pen at the bottom of my bag. Raising it up triumphantly, I continued a little cackle of joy while he looked at me in confusion.
"Its a pen." He stated, words flat but his small smile betrayed him.
"Not just any pen!" I scoffed. The thing itself was pretty hefty, black and gold with red lettering on the sides of it. It spelled out dogstaff california in uneven cursive. Other than that it was just a regular ball point pen. "It's my lucky pen dude! I've had this thing since I was seven. I had this ridiculous crush on this kid in my class named Frank and he always had this pen on him that was super fancy. He used it on every test and always got the best grades.
"Well, being seven, I decided that I wanted it. I stole it, put it in my back pocket, and left with my mom not two seconds later. We were driving home when all of a sudden…" I tossed the pen into thin air and sprawled myself out on Peter's bed. "Boom! We crash inappropriately a tree, my mom trying to dodge a car on the wrong side of the road."
He gasped dramatically, feigning fear as I continued my dramatic recount of events. "We both come out unscathed and the other driver pays for us to buy a brand new car. It has never left my side since. Special enough for you?"
He laughed slightly, rising and slamming himself down on the bed next to me. I giggled slightly as he gingerly grabbed the pen out of my hands, looking it over like the treasure it was.
"Well, good thing. I can't imagine life without you." He muttered, a warm grin plastered on his cheeks. Apparently it took him a moment to realize what he just said as his face turned red not two seconds later, dropping the pen back into my bag. "I mean, you know, having a- you know- friend. You as a friend. B-but not like owning you, you know your decision not anything like that just-"
My fingers clamped over his lips, stopping the word vomit that was streaming out before he said something he would regret. "I got you Pete." I could feel his embraced grin widen under my fingers as he nodded. I pulled away my hand, confident that he wouldn't be letting out any more long strings of stupidness right now.
"But seriously, I'm lucky." He mumbled, that shy little demeanor shrinking in as he avoided my gaze.
I let out a small airy laugh. "Me too."
