To Say Goodbye

"You know Carmine, I like you." She pulled down the lever again, a violent shock burning my nerves and sending my body up in a jerking state. The electricity boiled in my blood, head fuzzy as my chest rapidly rose and fell in pain. "Not everyone would have been able to adapt to those powers, evade me, survive this much electrocution. But here you are, you've been running for so long, don't you just want it to stop?" My lungs burned as I coughed up another spurt of blood.

"I know what a monster you are, and for as long as I can hold on, you are not getting these powers. And don't pretend like you'll let me live, I know better." She laughed, a harsh cackle that remained airy at the same time. A tall man, long hair pulled back into a short ponytail behind his dark skin glaring down at me before raising the bed I was strapped to and shoving a few different needles into me. I winced, nothing more than a pinprick pain coming from the different clear liquids entering my body but I knew that nothing good could come from what was now in my bloodstreams.

"Oh, you're wondering what I just shoved into your body?" She raised a perfectly manicured porcelain hand, tucking a straight strand of jet black hair behind her ear. "Each of those vials has an antibody in it made to destroy the magnetic properties in your bloodstream. That's how you control your body you know, now that you have that special potion in your brain. And then that emptied blood will take the antibodies to your brain, find every last piece of my precious drug because it will be attracted to the stored materials and cultivate behind your eyes, so I can withdraw it as painfully as possible and then, when your weak and in pain and want it all to end. I will let you out of your bonds. And leave you in there to starve. Powerless, useless and forgotten!" She rammed her face into the window, eyes gleaming with anger and excitement as she looked onto my powerless form. "Remembered as a fake person and a minor roadblock in my plan to victory. And I.."

She pulled herself away, flattening down her clothes and returning to the exit of the bright pristine room that I would die in. "Will be remembered forever."

The minutes got longer as hot pricks of pain shot through me, my skin turning grey and head-spinning as my eyes became heavy. The lights were blinding, splitting pains echoing inside my head with each breath I took. The man sitting next to me would just stare, intrigued at my pain and the hot sweat radiating off of me. "Can I help you there bud?" He tilted his head, standing and injecting some more murder bots into my bloodstream.

"No, unfortunately, I drew the short straw, and here I am. But I have to say, watching your body progressively deteriorate is quite impressive. How your organs have come to rely on the super components in your brain, I suspect you won't live long enough to starve after it's all said and done. You'll be long gone before nightfall. He chuckled, sitting back in his fold-out chair and wiping back a couple of loose strands of his hair.

I huffed, pinching shut my eyes as the room began to spin. I wanted to throw up, but there really wasn't anything in me to let loose other than bile and stomach acid, so I held my nose and kept my mind active. There was always a way out, but why couldn't I see one?

No use of power here, this guy obviously wasn't going to give me any help and I was in shape to wiggle my way out of these cuffs. No one would know I was gone until mom came home after work. Except Peter, damn. First I miss breakfast then he finds out I've been kidnapped, not a great way to spend your Saturday morning...

And it's not like Pete could do anything, he was just a normal kid. Getting mixed up in all of this, I felt bad. I just hope he would be there for mom, she didn't deserve any of this, but when your daughter shows up home bloody, physical features literally morphing and with superpowers, you don't really have a choice but to change your name and move across the country.

She loves me, well soon it'll be loved.

"Hey.." I mumbled it out slightly as the guy stood and came over to my side. "Could you do something for me? Like just leave my mom a note or something, cause we both know I'm not leaving here even in a body bag." The hulk of a man just glanced down at me not even saying a word. "Come on dude, I'm just a kid, I mean look at me?" I gestured with what I could move of my wrist at the gray husk of a teenage girl I was becoming. "And I bet you would want to say bye to your mom too, or were you clone spliced in this big dumb lab." He sighed, pulling a phone out of his pocket.

"What do you want it to say, and keep it short." I took in as deep a breath as I could.

"I love you, take care of Peter, don't worry about me, and..” I trailed off, my eyes stinging with the tears I refused to cry, “I'm sorry." He typed it out, shoving the device back into his pocket. He nodded once, returning to his chair and leaning back his head for some sleep.

I sucked in a strained breath, staring at the ceiling tiles of the infinite room and crossed my fingers. Please, if there is a God, I prayed, not really knowing what else to do, save me.
