When Marcus had been pulled from the dungeons the promised one week later he was a mess. The bruised and bloodied boy was left with torn and ragged clothes and he spoke to nobody for a month, spending his days staring vacantly at the wall. The muzzle had left an ugly bruise that coated the lower half of his face, smothering his jaw with a medley of mottled colours. There were small wounds where it had dug into his skin a little too tight. He barely ate and hardly slept for his dreams were nightmares filled with madness and fear. All he could feel were their fingers tearing at his hair, limbs holding him down as they giggled and laughed, eyes glinting with insane delight. These people had been long since destroyed. They'd been pushed over the brink - driven insane. They'd lost everything. All that was left was broken insanity.

Marcus was only a boy?

They weren't the ones who cared.

Marcus never attempted to run away again.

He retreated into himself and withdrew from Isa in order not to influence her. She'd only get hurt if she were anything like him. He kept his head down and followed his father's every order, attended every meeting, became a Death Eater and used his persuasive voice when he was told to, slowly learning to master it. He fought and hurt when he was told to fight and hurt. He despised it but learned that it was the only chance to vent his pent up emotions he'd get. Marcus listened and obeyed.

Repeat, repeat, repeat.

If he did something wrong, Isa took the punishment.

Marcus learned not to slip up, or at least to cover his mistakes so well it was almost impossible to trace it back to him.

His loyalty to his younger sister turned him into something he never wanted to be considered as. Something like his father, a monster wearing human skin.

And at the beginning of the Hogwarts year, he was given a mission. His role was to attend Hogwarts amongst the other ignorant children as a spy of sorts. He was one of the eyes and ears of the Death Eaters. He would keep an eye on things and report back. He'd go to the place where people would least expect to find him.

Marcus would persuade the Sorting Hat to place him in Hufflepuff. They would give him a new name and create a background for him. A new identity with no flaws. He could be something outside of the reputation he'd built with a new name in a school where nobody would know him.

Marcus Clove would be hidden at school. Marcus Ingram is who he'd become.

Maybe he would change, find a way to stand up to his father. Destroy him, his organisation, everything he stood for.

But could it really be considered a change? Or was it just painting another layer over the mask moulded onto his face?

But when he was sorted into Hufflepuff as per the plan, the people to be his dorm-mates were the last he anticipated. Nevermind Edward Thompson, Valador Smith and Callum Oritz. There was only one who caught his attention. There was another boy Marcus recognised from the stories of cruelty he'd heard from those who worked alongside his father.

He shouldn't be here! Marcus had panicked. The one boy who would have any reason to recognise him and ruin his cover was his own dorm mate.

Zaiden Dockery.
