There was something in the darkness that felt like a promise, like the world before dawn. And in the darkness, Lauren had taken refuge every single night.

After being stuck in the upside down, something changed within the girl and everyone around her could see that.

It was like a part of her was still there and she couldn't get back to the person she was before.

She didn't want to leave the darkness, because she wanted to escape everything around her. She wanted to close her eyes and feel like she's nowhere, exactly where she wants to be.

Lauren spent the summer reading. Reading articles and novels, poems and plays. She hung around Nancy and Jonathan and couldn't help but see how much the two fit together.

When she wasn't reading, she was fighting. Every time Lauren closed her eyes she saw the upside down and she heard Barbara as she screamed for her life, so she needed a release. And the only way she could satisfy herself was by boxing...underground illegal boxing.

Lauren lied on her bed, staring at the ceiling as the sun started revealing itself. The girl didn't have to tell anyone that she barely slept you could clearly see it on her face.

Her door burst open and Dustin walked in. He looked at his sister and smiled when she turned to face him. "Good you're awake" He said as he walked into her room.

"geez Dustin...the least you could do is knock" she said as she sat up and looked at him. "Okay so it's the first day of school and I need help" he said nicely and Lauren tilted her head in thought.

"Help with what, dingus?" she asked with a shadow of a smile. "Ummm...don't laugh" he started and Lauren furrowed her eyebrows in question.

He played with a loose button on his sleep wear shirt as he clearly struggled to get the words out of his mouth

"I...I don't know what to wear"

And she laughed.

Lauren got dressed as quickly as she could and before she knew it Steve's car pulled up in front of her house so he and Nancy could pick her up

Lauren got dressed as quickly as she could and before she knew it Steve's car pulled up in front of her house so he and Nancy could pick her up. As she grabbed her bag to run outside her eye caught something on her dresser. She looked up to see the matching pair of glasses Barb got for her when she made fun of her pair. Lauren smiled sadly as she reached for it and put it on.
