"Hey can you see the date up there?" I asked lightly poked the guy in front of me. He turned around and snarled before looking to tell me.
"September 26 2019." He turned back around and continued his work as I wrote the day down. It was last period and we were finally getting a 3 day weekend for some teacher training thing. I groaned as I watched the clock.
My phone started vibrating repeatedly, causing the teacher to look around the class.
For some reason Tia and Seven had started blowing up my phone, as if they didn't have each other's number. I wanted to look but Mr.Labrizt was watching me like a hawk. We didn't really get along mainly because he's a jackass and I like to point out his flaws.
I looked up at the clock again and the excitement started to rise. "3..................2..........................1" the bell rang and everyone jumped from their seats shoving papers in their bags and rushing out the door, me included. I rushed to my locker throwing everything in, and then slammed it shut.
Everyone was excited to be going home to relax, and I wanted that too but there was something I needed to do before I could. I turned to start heading towards the gym, but saw Andy and his friends huddled by the wall.
I felt bad that I was still ignoring him, but I didn't know how to approach him. I was scared. The thought of having to talk to him started to freak me out. I b-lined for the special bathroom and changed out as quick as I could.
The nerves were racking up and I couldn't settle the butterflies in my stomach. I was excited. Cheerleading was my life in Cali, and it made me feel good about myself. Tryouts were this morning but they selected some people to come after school for second tryouts.
I took a deep breath before I walked out and rounded the corner. The hallways were bright and still kind of filled with kids. I felt weird walking through with just a crop top and short shorts on.
When I made it to the big gyms doors everything was fine, until I saw Andy inside. "Don't panic, he is only here to workout not because of you. Even football players need to warm up." I took another deep breath but still wasn't able to open the door.
"Look Kori's scared to go in. I wonder why." When I heard the voice I knew it was going to be a problem. "Andy's in there isn't he?"
I rolled my eyes and started to open the door, but she grabbed my arm. "I noticed you've been ghosting Andy. Is it because of what happened in his truck?"
My expression changed from angry to fearful. I didn't completely know what she was talking about but I was still scared that she might know what I did.
"What are you talking about?" I said putting on a poker face.
She looked me up and down before she laughed and let my arm go. "Someone said they saw you trying to sneak away from his truck early that morning, begging him to let you leave. Did he try to force you too? Or maybe you gave it up to him, and don't want anyone to know." Her face was concerned but her words were venomous.
"No, I got out of his truck and told him I'd meet him later, he wanted to get breakfast and I didn't. It was mutual." I turned around and opened the door, but paused when she spoke again.
"Well you better be as stubborn as a bull, cause one day he's gonna get tired of your innocent girl act and he's going to do you like he has every other girl. Rough!" She walked off leaving the words to rattle in my head.
At first it didn't surprise me, she always bad mouths Andy, but what does she mean. ;Do you like the other girls. Rough!; that's gotta mean something.
I walked in and rushed up to the huddled group of girls and boys to hear what the captain was saying. I looked back for a brief second and saw Andy looking at me. He didn't even half smile.
I tried to push everything out of my head and focus on the routine some of the girls were showing us, but it wouldn't stop buzzing around my head.
One of the girls saw me zoning out and came over to me. "Hey, you're Kori right? I read your name at this mornings tryouts. Your good."
"Thanks I've been cheering for a while." I said focusing on her.
"Listen, the coach is looking for some new flyers and we all wrote down your name for one of them. You just gotta focus and prove you can handle this. After the routine we're gonna do tumbling, then finish tryouts with stunts and a final run through of the routine. I know you've got this, but you gotta prove you've got this." She walked off her ponytail bouncing with each prep step she took.
I went over what she was saying and decided that being on the team was gonna be more important than some girls petty antics.
An hour passed and we were finally done learning the routine and some cheers, they moved us into 5 lines for the tumble floor. This was my favorite part. I pulled my hair up into a half up ponytail and mentally prepared myself to tumble.
"Kori, on a scale of 1 to 10 what is your tumbling skill?" Coach Miraz yelled.
"8 and a half." I yelled back. I stood ready and a couple of the team members laughed at me.
"Kori, are you sure!" She yelled.
I still stood ready, and more people joined the laughing bunch. "Yes ma'am!" I said calmly.
She stood up off the bench and walked to the edge of the tumble track I was on. "Everyone quiet." She cleared her throat and continued. "Round off back handspring, back pike, step out, front handspring, round off, back twisting half.
I took a deep breath and started to tumble mentally saying every flip she asked me to do. "Round off back handspring, back pike, step out, front handspring, round off, double full back. Fuck!" I landed and quickly started to rub my temples out of irritation.
"Round off back handspring, double full back, step out, ariel, round off, double twisting front layout. Can you do it?" She shouted.
I looked at her and then the rest of the people in the gym noticing that Andy and his friends had been watching the whole time. "Yeah!" I shouted back breathlessly.
I straightened and took another deep breath. "Round off back handspring, double full back, step out, ariel, round off, double twisting front layout." I copied her to a T making sure I did exactly as she said this time. When I finished she walked up to me.
"Self taught or gymnastic?" She started to write down on her clip board.
"Cheerleading in California for four years." I said quietly.
The coach stepped closer looking at every part of my body. "Did you fly, you have strong legs." She looked over to a group of boys and signaled for them to come over. "Basket toss, with a simple toe touch or double back layout. Never mind you'll do both." She stepped back and the boys got into place.
"You guys wanna step it up a notch?" I looked at them and they nodded. "Just be ready to toss me like regular." They nodded and started to smile at each other.
I took a couple steps back and flipped into the basket toss, they tossed me up and I did a triple twisting layout. Then popped into a extended bow and arrow. We finished by doing a regular load out. The coach clapped sarcastically then told me to go sit on the bench.
After tryouts everyone left except me and the coach. She told me that I'm on the team but I'll need to do extra conditioning until she was satisfied. We agreed on my workout regimen and she let me go! Today was the start to an amazing weekend.
