Chapter 4: Explanations
John
"Can someone explain what is going on here?"
John froze. They were caught. They had been having the time of their life, until they were caught by a teacher.
"We were obviously enjoying the moonlight, until you ruined it!" Sherlock scowled.
The teacher sighed, before looking at them. "Do not go beyond the tape. And make sure no one sees you smoke."
"Yes, sir." Sherlock took an extra long drag and exhaled, watching the smoke curl and dissipate in the cold night.
The teacher shook his head and mumbled something about 'Sherlock and Mycroft bloody Holmes.
"That was close." Sherlock flicked his cigarette, letting the excess ash fall.
"That was more than close! We could've been punished horribly!" John still felt his legs shaking and his heart beating out of control.
"I've faced worse." Sherlock looked back before he entered the crime scene.
"You've faced worse! I've never done anything like this!" John whisper-shouted.
"I am here and will prevent you from doing anything idiotic," Sherlock said with a blunt smile.
"Bu-"
"Shhh..." Sherlock pushed John aside and stepped across the tape.
Hesitantly, John moved beside him and nearly threw up at what he saw.
There was a young girl on the ground, her head twisted in a strange angle, body stripped naked and... she was smiling. But that wasn't the most interesting thing about the corpse. There was no blood anywhere; just tears that sparkled under the moonlight.
It was John's former friend, Carol Winters.
"W... What happened here?" Even Sherlock was confused. John had never seen Sherlock so distressed.
Sherlock kneeled down, carefully observing her body from every angle possible. He removed her necklace and earrings, smelled her hands, opened her eyes and took off her shoes.
Then Sherlock stood up without saying a word and walked away.
"Hey! What are you doing?" No reply.
"You dragged me into this and now you're leaving without saying anything? You're not going to solve the murder?!"
Sherlock stopped and looked at John, face wet with tears. John felt pangs of sympathy for his friend who looked so hopeless.
"That... that was Carol Winters. She was my friend," Sherlock said. "And she's dead now. And I know that I am the reason she died."
John was at a loss for words as he saw Sherlock break down in front of him. He took Sherlock's hand, rubbing it.
"Do you want to walk around the Gardens again?" John asked, feeling terrible.
"... That would be lovely," Sherlock whispered, wiping his tears again.

The news of Carol Winters' death spread across the school like a wildfire. Everyone sympathized Carol's friends, who were shocked to the core.
"She was such a nice girl," Lin said. "Wonder, why someone murdered her."
"Be a bit more sympathetic. You were her friend," Peter said harshly.
"I didn't really like her- Well, I did, but not that much. She was friends with Sherlock though," Lin giggled. "Really hot boy."
"Shut it. Sherlock Holmes would never date someone who's offending Carol's death," Peter said.
"I'm not offending her death! I just said we didn't really know each other!" Lin scowled.
"I don't think he even could date someone! He's so cold," John said. "And he's strange."
"That makes him an enigma. I like that." Lin winked at John.
John rolled his eyes at Lin and took his books out of his locker.
"In fact, I'm going to ask him on a date later," Lin said. "If he refuses, that's okay. He's probably still mourning Carol."
"No, I'm not." Sherlock snuck behind Lin with a soft smile on his face.
John resisted the urge to laugh at Lin's shocked expression when she saw Sherlock behind her.
"Err... hi, Sher-"
"I accept your invitation." Sherlock smiled at her. "How 'bout eight o'clock? I'll pick you up."
Sherlock walked away with his bag slung over his shoulder, leaving not only Lin, but the rest too, flabbergasted.
Peter finally broke the silence saying, "...Well, that was unexpected."
"Yah... I- I'm going to class now." Lin left the two boys staring at each other confusedly.
"Do... What's your next class?" John asked.
"Art." Peter replied.
"Me too." The two friends walked down the hall, heading to Building B Class 312.
"Do you think Lin will be able to seduce Sherlock?" John asked.
"I hope not. She's a bit of a... slut," Peter whispered.
"Yah. Hey, do you want to go out for Dinner tomorrow?" John asked.
"...Are you asking me out on a date?" Peter grinned.
John blushed. "What? No, of course not! I was jus-"
"It's okay, John. I know your secret." Peter smiled at him. "It's okay."
