Chapter 16: Tricks

John

Here's another great thing about Baskerville High: it's a school next to three small towns that all have tourist attractions.

"Which town should we go to first? There's a Carnival and a lover's lake in Town Zippler. Town Greenday-"

"Just like the band?" Lisa asked.

"Yes. As I was saying, Town Greenday has a folk concert thing. And Town Shepherd has a really nice lake in the center of a forest."

"So where do we go?" Peter asked.

Everyone began to argue about where they should go first and where last. From the corner of John's eye, he saw Sherlock staring at the window like he was in deep thought.

"Sherlock? I think you should decide," John said.

Sherlock moved his head and replied, "Town Shepherd first and Town Zippler last."

"Okay then. Let's go," Peter said, forcing a smile.

John really did feel bad for what he'd pushed Peter into. But like they'd said, love did make you do stupid things.

But heck, he wasn't even sure if it was love. Love had never been clear to him, but right now, this was what he would do just to get Sherlock's attention. But it felt so wrong.

John sighed and looked out of the window. The world blurred around John and all he could see, all he could think about was Sherlock Holmes.

He didn't even realise when he'd fallen for that boy who was as cold as ice. And he couldn't touch him or he would get hurt.

"Why?" He silently asked himself.

He wondered why he had fallen for a boy who he never even had a chance with. The boy who could see everything except for one thing: his love for him.

"We're here!" Peter announced.

John stepped out of the car, taking in the sight before him.

It reminded him of the hidden lake Sherlock had shown him. The lake where Sherlock had broken down to pieces, into a vulnerable being instead of the proud man who knew everything. He was only a scared a boy who needed a friend.

"Wow," Peter whispered.

The group separated and they all wandered around the beautiful forest that was filled with birds and people strolling past them peacefully.

"It's beautiful, isn't it?" John's breathing hitched. Sherlock had suddenly appeared next to him like some Ninja, out to kill soundlessly.

"It is," John replied coolly.

"Just like the lake, isn't it?" Sherlock said.

"Yah. They could be sister lakes," John said, turning to him.

"Could be. Too far though." Sherlock turned away from him, which made John look away as well.

A tense silence settled between the two, like Sherlock was waiting for John to say something.

But John didn't and walked away instead, with his heart pumping faster than usually. He had wanted to say something, but he hadn't been able to. He wanted to open up, show Sherlock his love, but he shut it, shut himself away, because he was scared.

Kicking a stone in frustration, he caught Lisa's and Joshua's attention.

"Hey, John! Come 'ere!" Joshua called.

John walked over to the bridge above a stream that was connected to the lake, where the two were sitting.

"What is it?" John asked.

"What's up with you and Sherlock? And Peter? All three of you are acting weird," Lisa said.

"Even Sherlock," Joshua quipped.

"I don't know. It's just that we're facing some problems," John said.

"Oh, really? Because I think you like Sherlock and you're just using Peter to make him jealous," Lisa said angrily.

"Love can-"

"Make you do stupid things- but John! Don't you think Peter's getting hurt in the process? He's human too," Joshua pointed out.

"I know, I know," John said. "But I don't know how I'll ever get Sherlock Holmes to notice me otherwise."

"You know, if they don't like you, don't force it on them. Both will get hurt in the end anyways. So," Joshua put his hand on John's shoulder. "Leave it."

John stood up and quietly walked away from Lisa and Joshua, making sure they wouldn't see the tears streaming down his face. All because of two small problems. Little did they know, how large they'd grow.

"Hey! Watch-"

"Oh, hello John! Care for some fun?" It was Jim Moriarty.
