“What is that crackling sound?” one of the guard queried. His question was quickly answered when a burning tree came crashing to the ground, “Move!” Hayate yelled pushing the guard out of the way. “Hayate! There's a massive fire approaching!” Kaito yelled. Hayate looked up, “Move further away from the Castle's grounds!” Hayate's sharp command rang through the air. “What about Lord Inuyasha and Lord Sesshomaru?” Kaito asked. Hayate turned to look at the young solider. “We will pray for their safety.” Watching the advisor walk away, Katio turned to his most trusted friend, Ryu. “Can you cover up for me?’ Katio whispered. Ryu nodded.
Meanwhile…
The fire started to close in around the Western Castle. Pale eyelids flung open. Sesshomaru shook the leaves out of his hair. Climbing to his feet, the daiyokai looked around. Breathing in the cold air, the daiyokai caught movement in front of him. Akako was sluggishly climbing to his feet. But suddenly the southern’s lord legs bucked and he collapsed to the ground again. Sesshomaru sneered. “How does it feel to be weak?” the cold voice brought a faint smirk to Akako’s face. “I’m not the only one feeling weak” Akako replied, eyeing the wound which Sesshomaru’s hand was covering up. “I thought you would be back in the castle, saving your hanyou” Akako snickered. Sesshomaru snarled as he glared at the detestable man before him. “My first priority is to kill you” Sesshomaru said coldly. Then the daiyokai charged.
Little did Sesshomaru know that the fire had already reached the left wing, approaching closer to the unaware hanyou.
“Sesshomaru!” Inuyasha’s cry lingered through the room. Wary golden eyes peered over the edge of the window. Tears stained the rosy cheeks, Inuyasha sniffed. “You promise you would come back to me” Inuyasha whispered.
“Lord Inuyasha?” a soft voice spoke from behind. Inuyasha felt a hand on his shoulder, he spun around, snarling. Kaito leapt back in surprise. “It’s ok Inuyasha, it’s me, Kaito” the guard said smoothly. Inuyasha blinked. “Oh….I thought you would be someone else…”
“You can tell me after we get out of the Castle” Katio said, grabbing Inuyasha’s hand. “What do you mean?” the hanyou asked in confusion. “A forest fire will soon be upon this castle, I predict it was lit deliberately” Katio said heatedly. “NO! I can’t leave Sesshomaru!” Inuyasha cried, pulling away from the solider. Inuyasha tried to turn away but Katio stopped him. “Please Lord Inuyasha! I’m sure Sesshomaru would have done the same thing by waiting for you, but if Sesshomaru finds out you didn’t make it out….” The guard paused. Now understanding the situation, Inuyasha with a heavy heart followed the guard out of the room.
Sesshomaru was getting fuming. This battle with Akako was going nowhere. His yokai was roaring to be let out, “Enough of this childish game” Sesshomaru snarled. Akako stopped in his tracks. The aura around the daiyokai was shifting. In the forest, the animals scurried for safety, knowing what was going to happen. Akako watched in amazement as the golden eyes faded into cerise. The power was increasing; the southern lord could sense Sesshomaru’s yokai slowly rising to the surface. Akako gasped as he felt his own yokai trembled at the massive power radiating from the daiyokai. “Such incredible power” Akako whispered. Then a flash of red blinded Akako’s vision. Seconds later, the light faded away to expose the Western lord’s true form. The dog demon looked down at the Southern lord and growled. Sesshomaru’s mouth opened slightly so his tongue could flick over the sharp canines in an uncharacteristic feral gesture.
“What was that?” Inuyasha asked when a thunderous roar came from somewhere in the distance. “It sounds like a….dog” Katio muttered. Inuyasha looked at the guard with hope. “Do you think it might be Sesshomaru?” Inuyasha asked with unhidden hope. “Maybe” Katio said, continuing to walk. “Look out!” came the sudden warning, Inuyasha pushed the guard out of the way before a pillar on flames came crashing down. “We’re too late! The fire is here!” Katio yelled. Inuyasha rolled his eyes. “Come on, there must be a way out!” Inuyasha growled grabbing Katio’s hand, they started to run.
Akako snarled at the dog demon before also releasing his yokai form. Orange light flash in the air before a fox demon emerged; teeth bared and long eight tails swishing from side to side. The battle was about to begin…
The fire crackled and hissed around the two demons. Dirt and rocks were thrown into the air. Birds flew away as the two giant demons battled, showing no mercy. Sesshomaru growled with satisfaction when he managed to claw Akako’s chest. Akako yelped in pain, his red eyes burned with rage before charging forward and head-butting the dog demon in the chest causing Sesshomaru to stumble back into the trees.
“Dammit!” Inuyasha cursed, his eyes scanning the burning room, hoping to find an escape route. “Look Lord Inuyasha, an open window” Katio whispered, pointing to the window on the other side of the fire. “How do we get across?” Inuyasha asked, waiting for an answer.
“We must jump” Katio replied grimly. “You got to be joking” Inuyasha muttered. “Wish I was Lord Inuyasha” Katio smiled slightly. “Ok you go first” Inuyasha stepped aside but Katio shook his head. “No, your safety is more important, please go ahead” Katio bowed in respect. Inuyasha blushed in embarrassment before muttering a “Thank you”.
The fire hissed and sizzled. The flames were like hands, reaching out, hoping to drag their fallen victims to the depth of hell. Inuyasha gulped in fear. “Do not be afraid Lord Inuyasha” Katio said from behind him. Inuyasha swallowed down his fear before bending his legs and then in one swift motion, he jumped.
Sesshomaru growled at the Southern lord. His body was covered with open wounds and he was losing blood. Akako bared his teeth, lunging forward again, claws outstretched. However, Sesshomaru was prepared and he leapt onto the fox’s back. The fox demon snarled and roared at him, and no matter how many times Akako would twist and turn to get the dog demon off him, Sesshomaru hung on tight.
Sharp teeth sank into the red fur. Akako yelped in affliction. Blood stained the ground. He was losing too much blood… he was losing. The son of the Southern lands was losing to the great Sesshomaru.
Inuyasha squealed as he landed roughly on his side. “Lord Inuyasha! Are you ok!?” Katio called out. “Yeah, I’m fine” Inuyasha replied, climbing to his feet. “Go ahead! I’ll find my way out. You will find the camp outside the castle grounds” Katio shouted before a pillar crashed to the ground.
Taking a deep breath, Inuyasha squeezed through the window, his feet ached when he landed on the powdered earth. Inuyasha’s eyes widen when the ground shook. Looking up, he saw birds fly into the air and in the distance he saw dark shapes moving.
Akako screeched. The claws and teeth started to tear at his flesh. The fox demon staggered, the weight on top of him was crushing his body. Suddenly he saw a flash of red standing a few metres away from him. “That hanyou…” his yokai rumbled. He ruined everything, that hanyou will be the first to die. Akako sprang up into the air, Sesshomaru’s claws lost their grip and the dog demon landed on the ground.
Red eyes opened, just in time to see Akako turning away and heading straight for... Inuyasha. “NO!” Sesshomaru yokai roared. Jumping to his feet, the dog demon charged after the fox demon.
Inuyasha’s eyes widen when the fox demon came towards him. “HELP SESSHOMARU!” Inuyasha called out in his mind.
A cracking sound made the hanyou open his eyes. Inuyasha collapsed to his knees in relief. Akako was finally dead. Sesshomaru spat the fox’s head out of his mouth, before transforming back to human- like form.
“Inuyasha?” Sesshomaru whispered, picking up the hanyou in his arms.
Golden eyes looked up. “It’s all over right?” the small voice whispered.
Sesshomaru smiled before bringing Inuyasha into protective embrace.
“Yes, it’s all over now”.
