Turns out people do believe in things such as curses.

"Listen, all im saying is if phoenix scars exist, how do we know curses don't?" I raise an eyebrow at Abby whose walking beside me.

She has a point i guess.

A pheonix scar is a tattoo like scar you get on your body when you and your soulmate feel the same amount of emotion towards each other. Everyones soul gets a soulmate by the age of 2 and fate tries to bring them together somehow. The two have to feel the same amount of any emotion towards each other to gain the scar and everyones is custom to them. They glow when you get them, and any time that you and your soulmate feel that same high emotion.

I find them intriguing, I haven't seen many in person though. Over half the population managed to go without getting theirs which is crazy!

I grab the end of my slightly fraying scarf and pull it closer as Abby continues to ramble, a soft shiver working its way across my body. It may only be September but the autumn chill is coming in fast!

"Well, you've managed to only talk about this dumb curse theory all afternoon and then all the walk to my street and I've officially got a headache, so congratulations. Bye guys, good luck Oscar, hope you can escape her before she moves onto the dog again!" I wave bye to James and giggle.

Abby groans and bumps our shoulders. "Don't listen to him, he's seen that dog, it's just got this glint in it's eyes, i'm telling you! Hey, you should come over soon, you've not been over in what feels like years and mom misses you. You could always sleep over?" My body stiffens.

Oh no.

"I-umm yeah, m-maybe soon." She smiles sadly.

"Oscar, um, is there... is there a reason you don't hang out with us much outside of school? I know you say you have stuff to do at home but... I don't know, it almost feels like you're always too busy for us?" I look down and bite my lip, hating the fact i made her feel that way.

"Abby... i love y-you both so m-much, i'm so s-s-sorry you felt that w-way. The r-real thing is m-my dad is uh h-he's... he's unwell a-and it's hard to l-leave him alone." She turns to me with wide eyes.

"Oh my god Oscar i'm so sorry! Is there anything we can do to help? I'm sorry for asking oh god are you okay? This must be really tough for you! Oh i'm the worst for not realising!" I quickly shake my head. "It's f-fine really, he ju-just needs e-ex-extra support sometimes, it's n-nothing serious, don't w-worry!" She smiles softly at me before sighing.

"Sorry for kinda assuming it was about us, I just love you so much. Let us know if we can help in any way yeah?"

I smile stiffly, before seeing we've finally reached her street. "i'll a-see you tom-t-tomorrow!" Before she can say any more I hurry away.

Theres no need for them to know, It's no big deal and I don't want to be a burden.

I grab the edges of my jacket and pull them closer around me, trying to fight the cold bite of the air. I'll tell them eventually, just... just not yet.

I gently open the door, my head flying around trying to find him, and let out a soft breath when i see him asleep on the couch. I slowly walk over to the stairs but before I can make it, the floor creeks.

Oh no.

"Brat." I turn to face him. "Make dinner its 3:35 already." I nod and rush to the kitchen to start making his usual pasta.
