THR PROLOGUE
mike wheeler and el hopper have been best friends forever. everyone knew that. everyone knows that they met in first grade at a vending machine. el was short a quarter when trying to buy a can of coca cola, frustrated, she walked away. mike happened to watch the whole scene and reached into his pocket, he pulled out four quarters, just enough for a can of coke. he pushed the small coins into the slot and watched as the coke fell down to the bottom of the machine. he reached in and grabbed and can and walked over towards her. little 7 year old mike, having zero experience with girls at all, had no idea what to say to her so he simply handed her the coke.
el smiled at him brightly, "thank you! i was short a quarter, so thanks!" she exclaimed, "yeah no worries. i'm mike." he extended his hand toward her, "i'm el, nice to meet you."
and from that moment in sparked a friendship that lasted years. in middle school, many thought the friends were dating but many times they corrected them. they were just friends and that was all it was ever going to be.
