When Isaac entered back into the house, he stumbled into a group discussion in the living room. The roaring fireplace made the room the warmest in the house, as of late it became the most common and popular area for everyone to sit and talk. The subject in this issue was led by Evan who, in a calm and rational way, expressed his concerns for using the medical supplies on the animals. To him, he saw them as a non essential commodity.
"Well hold on now," Isaac interrupted, I need to diffuse this carefully... "I get what you're saying, but that dog is a hunting dog. We're gonna need her. I think in this case, we can make an exception for using one bag of fluids."
"Yeah but dude, these supplies we have are limited. I know I'm new here, but I think we need to decide a firm stance on whether or not we use those medical supplies on your dogs and cats."
"Alright..." Isaac stared down at the floor for a moment in thought, then looked up and offered a suggestion. "How 'bout from now on, we don't use what we have on the animals. In the next few weeks, we'll find a Vet, then we'll have separate supplies for us and them. Is that fair?"
"Yeah, that's fair." Evan became apologetic after that. "Sorry. I don't mean to sound like a dick. I'm sure I would do the same for my dog if he were here. I know it's only my second day here and I don't want you to think I'm trying to take control of things or tell you all what to do. It's your house. Whatever you say goes. But I just wanted to voice my concerns. My primary goal now is to help make things last here."
Isaac wanted to make sure that he recognized and valued his friends opinion. "No, you're good, I fully understand what you're saying. Don't think of this house as a dictatorship. Let me stress this and make this clear to all of you, what I want to have here is a democracy. We should continue to make our decisions as a group. Better yet, as a family. We've been doing a great job of that so far, let's not let it fall apart."
"Well," Larry said as he leaned back into the sofa. "What should we do next then?"
Together the group spitballed ideas around the burning fire of what their next move should be. With the idea of democracy in mind, everyone got to say their piece. The ideas flowed uninterrupted between them like electricity through a wire and many of them had worthy ideas to follow through on. Some, not so much.
Kimmy and Natalie felt that it was time to try to find their lost parents, brothers, and sisters. A few others perked up at this idea too, but it was quickly shut down when Evan and Larry both emphasized that it would be next to impossible to do this and it wasn't worth risking their lives. The two were noticeably disappointed and bitter at their harsh judgement, but in the end they accepted the answer. It wasn't until Krissy Pfeiffer said her piece that they decided to put these ideas in writing and in order of need.
"Maybe we should plan to visit a vet next," Krissy spoke up. Her hair was tied back in a bun today. Her hand rested on her German Shepard, Raymond, who sat by her leg with one ear pointing up and the other folded over. "It's not urgent, but at some point my dog is going to need some flea treatment. I'm sure Kimmy's goldies are going to need them too and every other pet here."
"Is that all you need from the vet?" Isaac asked.
"Yeah. Like I said, it's nothing urgent. But at some point it would be nice to have. I don't want them to get fleas and complications from the tapeworms they can get from eating them. And obviously while we're there we grab whatever else we need so we can have some medicine and more food for them if and when we need it. Were not low on food or anything though, the cats and dogs are good for like three months."
"We might not have to worry about the fleas though since it's so cold out now," suggested Isaac, "but we're definitely gonna have to do some research and find the nearest Veterinarian's office. To be honest I'm not sure if there is one close around here on this side of the river, " He paused in thought then said, "The closest one I know of is in Lawrenceburg. I used to take my kitty there when I lived over that way. I think that's about twenty, thirty minutes away from here."
