I watched as Christine was laughing and talking with Mel, Ashley, and Rachel. They were all leaned against the edge of the boat, their hair whipping around with the wind.
"Hey, man," Alex came up beside me. I was snapped out of my thoughts as I turned to look at him.
"Long time, no see," I replied I pulled him in for a quick hug. "How've ya been?"
"Great, really missed being out here on the boat," he sighed, bringing his beer bottle to his lips. He turned to the girls leaning against the boat. "I think I'm going to ask Rachel to marry me."
I nearly spit out my beer. Alex had never ever been the commitment, long term relationship guy all throughout high school and college, and now he was thinking about proposing?
"I thought you were anti-marriage," I teased. He gave a laugh as his eyes settled on Rachel.
"I was, you know I was. But, Rachel man. I know she's smoking hot and all, but damn she has a heart of gold," he gushed. I laughed. Five years ago, you would've never heard those words come out of that guy's mouth.
"I'm happy for ya, I hope it goes well," I said. He turned to face me.
"Enough about Rach, though. Tell me about Christine," he said, a shit eating grin spreading on his face.
"I met her at the hospital, she used to be a nurse," I told him, my eyes landing on her. That day, I never would have imagined us being the way that we were now.
"Banging the nurse, classic," Alex teased, nudging me I just shook my head at him.
"We actually didn't have sex until like four months into it, honestly," I told him. His eyes shot open wide.
"Damn, Jonny, this girl must be pretty fuckin' special," he commented.
"She definitely is," I said outloud, but I didn't really say it to anyone in particular. I had the sudden urge to be with her, hold her. That urge had been happening more and more. I just wanted to have my arms around her.
"Jonny," Alex snapped me from my thoughts.
"Hm?" I asked, taking my eyes off of Christine.
"You were hardcore staring," he informed me. I let out a small laugh. "When's the wedding?" I actually did spit out some of my beer this time.
"What wedding?" I asked.
"Yours and Christine's," he replied nonchalantly.
"I haven't even proposed yet. We've only been together less than a year..." i trailed off.
"So? You're head-over-heels, Toews, and I have barely seen you two together. I can just tell."
"Jesus Christ, don't scare me like that," I laughed, lightly shoving him. He rolled his eyes at me.
"I never would've expected this from you, honestly."
"What does that mean?" I questioned, knitting my eyebrows together.
"She's a nice girl. Beautiful, good girl-next-door type. We all know you. She isn't the type that you used to describe as your dream women, let's be real," he explained. "And we all know about Macy and all that good shit. Two years ago, you would've never got ridden of a sex buddy for a real relationship with a good girl. So, no I didn't expect to see a girl like Christine walk onto this boat today, but it's a good surprise. I'm happy for you, man."
He wasn't wrong. Christine was a good girl, and she was the type I would not have went for a few years ago. But something in me that day drew me to her, and now I had the best thing that's ever been mine.
I wanted to marry her.
