''You are what?!'' Spencer screamed in my face after I had told her about the situation between Alison and I. I wasn't able to finish before she jumped up from where she was sitting and started to freak out. Like things aren't bad enough already. She did not manage to make me feel a little less out of the ordinary, not that I was expecting anything else from Ms, RuleLover. ''Jesus christ Emily! What on earth is wrong with you??''
''I already know that it's wrong, Spencer.'' I assured her calmly with my hands signaling her to keep it down. ''I knew exactly what the consequences could have been if I chose to be with her.''
''Yet you chose her. Why?'' Spencer dismissively questioned, her arms firmly folded across her chest.
''Because I..'' I paused and sighed. ''Because I fell in love with her.''
''You fell in love with her?'' Spencer laughed provocatively and shook her head. ''At least now I got an explanation for why you've been sneaking away from the group, why you've been acting all distant and most importantly, why you deliberately all of a sudden decided to shut me out of your life.''
''I'm not choosing her over you, Spencer. You are my best friend, it's different.'' I tried to convince her, but it was like she already had decided how she wanted things to end.
Spencer just stared at me with a blank expression.
''It was never my intention that you'd come second. You just have to understand that I couldn't tell you what was going on, especially after how you, only minutes earlier, had clarified the rules for me.'' I wanted nothing but to clear up this mess. No matter how often Spencer gets on my nerves, I still need her in my life. She plays an important role in my autobiography.
Spencer sank down on her bed and I noticed her tongue moving in her mouth as she thought about this. She probably had a billion thoughts occupying her mind. Eventually she looked up from her lap and straight into my eyes. ''I wish you hadn't told me.''
''What? Why not?''
''Because if the student council finds out about your relationship, then they'll probably investigate if someone else knew about it. I'm their first target, and I'm the worst secret keeper under pressure. If they finds out that I knew about it before they did, then my future at Jefferson's would be gone with the wind.'' Spencer explained with her shoes tapping against the wooden floor.
That's something that hadn't crossed my mind. I didn't realize that she'd be a victim of my actions if she knew about this.
''I only told you because I hate keeping secrets between us. Alison and I will make sure to stay a secret. The plan is for no one to find out about us. I just needed to get confirmed that you'll still be my friend.''
Spencer bit her finger nail nervously and avoided looking at me. ''I'll always be your friend, Emily.''
''Look me in the eyes and say it again.'' I ordered.
Spencer fought against the angel on her shoulder and glanced at me. ''I mean it.'' She casually said.
I smiled discreetly and got up from the bed. ''Now hug me.'' I demanded.
Spencer gulped and shook her head. ''You know I don't like hugs.''
''Neither do I, but here we are. Now give me a hug.'' I insisted and waved her over. She finally stood up and hesitatingly wrapped her arms around me. I pulled her closer and hugged her tightly.
''Uh..Em.. I.. can't breath..'' Spencer squeezed out.
I quickly let go of her and brushed off her shoulder. ''Sorry.''
Spencer cracked a smile and patted my shoulder. I thought she'd let go afterwards, instead she gripped my shoulder roughly and I almost winced in pain. ''For god's sake don't screw this up, Em.''
''Ouch.'' I mumbled and held the spot. ''Sure Wolverine. I won't.''
''Emily Fields. Please report to the principal's office.''
Both Spencer and I tilted our heads to look at the small speaker that was located in the corner of the room.
''Great! It took five seconds before you screwed up. Good work, Emily!'' Spencer sarcastically blurted out and slapped me forcefully on the upper arm.
''Ouch!'' I repeated, this time louder. ''I did not do anything!'' I told Spencer.
''Tell that to the principal.'' Spencer muttered and laid down on her bed to continue reading the book the was in the middle of when I stormed in earlier.
I groaned and put on my uniform jacket before I headed out. Every house had heard that the message from the principal, so everyone was staring at me as I walked up along the avenue to reach the main building. On the second floor was the principal's office.
When I got there the door was wide open. I heard voices. I went up to the door frame and knocked gently to earn their attention. As the figures turned to face me, I felt how a lump got stuck in my throat and the ability to breath properly disappeared.
I gulped loudly. ''Mom..?''
