london, united kingdom, seven thirteen am

rain drizzled quietly on the crackled windowsill of the bakery, the rain calmed its way into a daily routine of our lives.

one by one the rest of my life itself strolled into the studio five minutes till seven thirty

muffled breaths and rain dropping off of coats, the band smiled and immediately looked at one another thankful for everyone being here.

the clock ticked at twenty minutes away from midnight and a new day would begin, there was one last submission that we had to listen to as a whole band.

yawning and groaning we agreed that it had to be the best saved for last

i clicked on the tab and a pale face appeared on screen, he had no hair and he was very skinny

he wore a hospital gown and he was sitting in the lobby of a hospital, he sat in front of an old beat up piano.

then there was his dimpled smile, it automatically brightened the world, he pushed a pair of glasses onto the tip of his nose and he began talking.

"hi coldplay, my name is reese casson, i am eighteen years old and i would have just graduated high school

i am diagnosed with stage four lung cancer and i'm currently located in ann arbor, michigan in the united states.

today i'd love to play you a song i wrote called everglow which i wrote here in the hospital

this song is very special to me and since i won't be as long as others i'd like to share it with you hoping it could mean something to you like it does to me

you guys are my biggest inspirations and i really hope you enjoy this."

his fingers hovered softly over the keys and he closed his eyes and he began to play

it began with a steady slow pace but it had a beautiful sound adding to it

he sang the words at a soft whisper trying to release his lyrics out into the world

his face softly grew into the music, his fingers magically moved and he knew the song by heart.

his ability to play a magical scene is what blew my mind away, at eighteen years old this young adult has the ability to play and write music as a famous musician.

for four minutes and forty two seconds it one of the most beautiful pieces that i've ever listened to

he finished the piece and he took a deep breath

"thank you chris, jonny, guy, will and phil for changing my world and making my messy life whole. your music and you as people means a lot to me and i thank you for the opportunity."

he waved at the camera and said goodbye

the last thing appearing on camera was his smile and the video cut

an email attachment link was also underneath the video

tears spilled down my palms as i wiped my face

i moved the mouse and i clicked on the link and it opened a new tab

it was an email

"dear coldplay,

this is reese's mother catherine

this video was created three days before reese passed away of cancer

i nearly forgot the due date of the contest due to with being overwhelmed with everything that's happened in the last couple of weeks

reese was such a strong kid and i wanted to give you a little more insight about him

he wrote stories if he were the sixth member photographer known as r42 in coldplay, your music really brought him to life especially with everything he dealt with

he dealt with his best friend dying of suicide, he was ran over and dragged by a car, he constantly was sick and needed nurses at home all the time, he dealt with an abusive father who caused me to raise him as a single mother, he was bullied, he dealt with self harming, he attempted suicide by drowning himself and lastly he lived and died of cancer at eighteen years old

it was very hard for him growing up and especially me trying to be the best parent possible making him feel loved even when he didn't love himself, sharing this information really helps me get everything off of my chest and speaking to words to a group of caring people in this world who we need more of

these issues though never defined him as a person and he never let it show, yet in his stories he could take his problems and write them out if someone had dealt with it too and he was the bigger person to help. i believe he wrote his issues and feelings in the view points of all sorts of people to help him see his life in a different perspective allowing him to accept himself for who he was

he wasn't a dark kid he was the brightest among them all especially with how many times he fell he stood up every single time growing stronger and being the best he could be but, he needed to express his help in a way he could comprehend and you as a band helped him do what he needed to do to feel emotion and share what he needed to share in his own form

i thank you as a mother for allowing my son to see a different view in life that it's not just music but it's who you are as a person and how you deal with everyday things in life

reese knew every song by heart and it made his whole life that even in his last year he taught himself how to play piano and specifically songs written by coldplay

his favorite song was us against the world in the mylo xyloto album

thank you again for giving my son a chance of really living

sincerely, catherine casson"

tears were spread among the five of us and no one had said a word other than jonny

"everglow is our final song, a head full of dreams is finished"

a week from today our album is launching early june instead of december

everglow was the eleventh and final song

the clock read 00:00 am and the day had only just begun
