[Story] Rivals

"So, why chess?"

Envy is not a big fan of gaming. Or sports. Or something that combines both of them. He has seen his sister, Sloth, playing a bunch of games, most of them being on computer or mobile phone. He has seen Wrath and Gluttony practicing some sports created by the Humans, with Wrath insisting that they will be useful for him when using his fire power (in which Envy thinks is ridiculous for many reasons) and Gluttony trying to keep up for the sake of keeping himself alive (Envy doesn't believe that Spirits can die, but whatever).

However, out of the blue, Mischievous decides to take him away from the camp, all while bringing a chessboard along with him, and then invites him for a game. Mischievous has never once told him anything about his reasons to make him play the game. Envy knows the rules of chess pretty well, but it doesn't mean he wants to play it on a whim.

Mischievous smirks upon hearing the question. "I can see that you're smart, Envy."

"Just answer me, dammit."

"I just wanna know if your intelligence comes naturally or not," Mischievous replies while playing with a pawn piece. "Because I heard you had read a lot of books."

"From where did you—" Envy decides that asking that to Mischievous is not worth his time. "Well, yeah, I have read lots of them. So what?"

"Did you do that out of spite or anything?"

"I'm not named Invidia for nothing."

Mischievous laughs. "Right."

"Now answer my question."

"Since we are both Smart Spirits," Mischievous begins to answer, "let's consider this the battle of wits between us."

Envy raises his eyebrows. "I thought we were allies?"

"Allies can have battles among themselves, right? Just friendly ones."

Oh, right. It's different from the conflict between Pride and him. He thinks of Pride as an arrogant Spirit who just wants to dominate the world for the sake of dominating the world. That's why he hates him; he's envious of his brother having that huge ambition. He wants to see him fall down into oblivion.

That's why he's here. With Mischievous. With Despair. With everyone else. He wants to conquer the world, but to do so he must defeat his brother first. And so he forms an alliance with them to make his own ambition come true.

Wait. Friendly battles among allies?

As he drifts away from his train of thought, he smirks back to Mischievous. "Does this make us rivals?"

The auburn-haired Spirit grins. "If you'd like to be."

Envy, still smiling, lifts a pawn piece up from the chessboard, then puts it on the position he wants.

"Game on, Mischievous."

I had this on Google Docs for almost a month. Decided to release this here since MischiEnvy is becoming a thing. Thanks to ArrowsAnonymous (fuck desktop Wattpad, I can't mention them right) for the prompt, although I forgot what prompt was this. I don't even know if this is a prompt fiction or not. LMAO.

Sorry if it's too short. I just wanted to write short stories.
