"Die By The Drop" By The Dead Weather

. F I V E .

“K-Kill?”

In the abstract Iris had though that ingesting blood would be unavoidable but the concept of killing just never even entered her mind. Naive of her sure but Iris has never been one to really dwell too much on the thought of death. She’s always been a bit of an optimist but she’s been knocked right off her sunny disposition with Xavier’s newest request.

Killing? She’s not sure she can do that.

“Are we really back to the whole stuttering thing?” He drawls out.

“I don’t think I can do that.” She whispers feeling her stomach knot even at the idea of it. She’s not a malicious person by nature and has never hurt anyone physically in her life. She doesn’t even know how to go about it if even she did get the guts to do something like that. “No, I don’t think I can.”

“You can and you will.” Xavier says simply lowering his whisky glass after another sip before swishing the brown liquid. “This really isn’t an option.”

“B-But—“

“And stop stuttering.” He snaps, cutting her off. “You know how I hate it.”

Iris dips her head and starts pulling on the sleeves of her shirt. She feels sick, sick to her stomach right now but is there really any way out of this? The clink of the glass on the wood of the table makes her lift her eyes to see Xavier studying her with an unsettling intensity. He seems to be thinking really hard about something but she can’t think what about and if it’ll be good news for her. Though from what she knows of his personality so far, she doubts anything good will come from him thinking about her.

“This is what you’re going to do. You’re going to pick someone in here and then you will lure him outside into the back alley. You will feed on him, you won’t need my help with that, its all instinct but since I’m feeling generous tonight I’ll help you get rid of the body. Understood?”

The cold calculation of his voice has her squirming in her spot.

“I don’t think I can do this.”

“Do you want to die?” He snaps lowly. “Because that is exactly what will happen if you do not feed soon. You have only survived this long because of the blood I gave you. If I refuse to do that you won’t last two days without starving to deal and I assure you that, that is not the way one would want to go if they had a choice.”

“But—“

Xavier sighs sharply, “Try to think of this objectively. You are a predator in an urban jungle, Iris. You need to feed to survive and like any good predator you must fight to survive. Hunting and capturing prey is part of that food chain and no matter how much humans like to think they top that chain, they don’t. Like they hunt deer or any other game we must hunt to fill our bellies. It is a truth none of us can ignore.”

Iris absorbs all this with much effort before raising her eyes to scan the room. He’s right about one thing; she needs to think of this objectively. She needs to drink blood to survive now and to her knowledge that not selling any blood bags at the local grocery store. With a new determination she searches the room looking for the most evil looking guy. Perhaps if she chooses a bad person that deserves to be killed than maybe she can do this by convincing herself that what she’s really doing is a public service.
