"Just Like You Imagined" By Nine Inch Nails

. E P I L O G U E .

Every night Nancy has the same nightmare over and over again. It always centers on the bloodied woman who collapsed in her doorway four months ago. She had heard the woman was doing fine after her attack but Nancy couldn’t shake the feeling that she had missed something vital.

Often she thought about what the woman tried to tell her. Something with a ‘V’ that Nancy couldn’t remember when conscious but in her dreams always haunted her. Her husband, Jim tried to help her but after the trauma she had she wasn’t her old self. Jim didn’t take long to move into his mistresses apartment and Nancy took even less time to file for divorce.

But that’s all beside the point.

Lights are flashing around her and she’s feeling a bit dizzy from all the apple martini’s she’s had throughout the night. Her best friends, Rachel and Kim are beside her laughing away about something when she feels her stomach roll. Clutching the fabric of her skin-tight little black dress Nancy she tries to stop herself from hurling.

So maybe six martinis’ was a bad idea.

“Nance, you okay, honey?” Rachel asks.

Nancy takes a deep breath and nods. “I’m fine. I just think I need to use the bathroom.”

“Do you want us to come with you?” Kim asks.

Shaking her head Nancy waves them off. “I’ll be fine. Just don’t go wandering away or I’ll never find you again in this hoard.”

Both women laugh and go back to chatting with a flirty guy who she hadn’t noticed has approached their little group. Moving through the crowds she tries to ignore any hands that grope her on the way. She’s not feeling well enough to put some guy a decade younger than her in his place.

When she moves past of the sea of people she sighs in relief. Nancy adjusts her dress and outs rights to her hair before moving down the narrow hallway to the bathrooms. It’s so dark in here, she thinks nervously, feeling a bad feeling build in her stomach as hairs rise on the back of her neck.

Nancy squints as she spots two figures in the distance, a man and a woman she’s guessing. She shrinks back a bit though when a slurping sound reaches her hears and her cheeks go pink. Oh my god, did people really do that in public nowadays? Nancy is about to turn away from the scene, feeling completely embarrassed, when she hears a thud from where the couple was.

Turning away she sees a figure slumped on the ground, highlighted by the flashing lights of the dance floor. The clicking of heels becomes louder as the other figure approaches Nancy. To her surprise the figure belongs to a woman, a very familiar looking woman.

Shaking the thought off she asks, “Is your friend okay?”

The woman lifts her head and Nancy jerks back. It’s the woman from her nightmares. Nancy stares at the woman wide eyed at how healthy she seems and also odd. The woman’s orange eyes seem to glow in the darkness and when a flash of strobe light hits the woman’s face Nancy notices something staining her chin.

“You…”

The woman smiles, two sharp fangs not missing Nancy’s gaze. “He’ll be fine. I think he was just a little drunk.”

“Do I know you?” Nancy asks shakily.

“Do you want to?” The woman asks, tilting her head and studying her.

Nancy feels fear travel through her mind at the hungry way the woman is looking at her. “N-No. I must have c-confused you with someone else.”

“I must have one of those faces.”

“Probably.” Nancy says forcing a shaky smile.

“Iris? Are you ready to go?”

Both Nancy and the woman named Iris turn towards the source of the deep voice. Nancy freezes as a pair of unusually bright eyes land on her impassively and she feels her pulse quicken. The woman smiles adoringly at the man and walks over to him easily before he wraps an arm around Iris’s waist.

“Making new friends?” He asks her.

Iris smirks at Nancy, “Nope, just being mistaken for old ones.”

The man grunts and starts pulling Iris towards the main part of the club. Iris turns her head and smiles unnervingly at Nancy making her shiver. “Have a good night.”

“Uh, you too.”

As soon as the couple are out of sight Nancy leans against the nearest wall and tries to calm her heart. Replaying the conversation Nancy tries to figure out why she was so scared but she can’t pinpoint it. They seemed normal but their eyes and their teeth seemed out of place, primal maybe. Running a hand down her sweaty face she tries to push the thought away.

What she’s thinking is just too crazy to be believed.

Vampires don’t exist.
