MERIDA:

I look over my home village that I no longer recognize, everything burned down and torn apart, the people gathering bodies of dragons and tossing them into the waves below, the bodies of my people sorted for proper funerals as people begin to recover from such an unexpected brawl...

I drown out the sound of some of them crying, the mourning too much for me to bear...

Hiccup comes back after returning Toothless to his cove, concern for me in his eyes when he spots me. He runs over to where I am and pulls me into an unexpected embrace, letting out a relieved breath... well half relieved... we lost a lot of men tonight...

"Are you okay?" he immediately asks me before finally pulling back enough to look at me.

"Yeah..." I say weakly, mustering up a smile. "You?"

"Just scrapes and bruises..." he replies. That's when I notice some cuts on his face and arm that ripped his tunic sleeve where something clawed him... His eyes are cast down before he says, "We were among the lucky ones..." with a heavy heart, his hand still at my jawline as he thinks about all that just happened. I bet my face is just as dirty as his...

I hesitantly lift my hand and rub it over his cheek. My fingers come away dark with soot. "Lucky," I echo.

Before my hand completely leaves his face, he brings up his free one to hold onto it, his expression weighed down with sorrow. "I can't believe that they came so far south so soon..." he says quietly almost as if to himself as his gaze remains on the grass.

"So soon? You mean you knew they were coming?"

"No, I didn't know for sure... I didn't expect them to come down here until long after they conquered us... We should have warned your parents sooner..."

I frown, confused. "You're right... that doesn't make sense. Why do you think they came here so soon?"

He shakes his head slightly, eyes still on the ground. "I don't know..." he looks up at me then. "Something is drawing them out of the north..."

My eyes narrow and I think on what that could be...

He shakes his head slightly, thinking hard... "I need to talk to my dad about this..." He then looks up at me. "You should see your parents. Let them know you're okay."
