Where am I? I don't know.

Dead?

...No

No not yet...

Have I disappeared as well?

Suddenly my eyes flash open and I take a thick breath of freezing cold air. My lungs are stiff and I am gasping for breath. My eyes take a second to focus but once they do I see the moon... Bright in the sky... yet so far...

It's cold... but not temperature wise. I feel a horrid sense of darkness inside me that makes my bones chilled. I suddenly remember all that had just happened and I finally move, finding my body lying on a thick layer of ice. Once I stand up I realize it's the small frozen pond that I fell in when I first became a Guardian... but it's also the pond next to a familiar town I was just in only moments ago. I frown and grab my staff lying beside me.

My mind is confused and panicking. I don't know where I am or what era I am even in. So I take off through the trees and towards the houses nearby...

(track: "Imperfect Lock" by Hans Zimmer)

I stop however when I realize the houses have been replaced with a factory... This can't be right. I take a left through the air and search for the Bennett's house. When I find it I rush over and check the familiar window... But instead I see an older female teenager asleep inside it... I gasp and pull back, looking around the town I knew so well but finding it so strange and unfamiliar. I see an older woman outside but she quickly rushes indoors. The whole area is trashed and poverty swallows every being who lives here. Everything has a horrible shadow cast over it like the entire world is haunted.

My breathing hasn't slowed and neither has my heart rate. I dart north with wicked speed to find the city but where it should be, I see a military bunker, heavily armored with gates and fences surrounding it. The city is further west but I don't find it any more pleasant than the neighborhood south. It's horrible and dark. It's dirty and crime infested... People are sleeping on the streets. Drunkards are mugging innocent civilians. Death and destruction lace the whole country in a thick mask; inescapable to everyone. And it's not just here... Everywhere around the world wars rage as if it's 1945 again. Those who aren't working in factories are in armies for different countries. There are few who are rich and the monopolies have gained money by war profiteering.

Everywhere I look there is darkness and sorrow. There's killing and stealing and abusing... So many things that tear my heart to pieces. Children are no longer innocent. They are miserable and always frightened...
