Ava's POV

Alan, Daph and I, followed by the rest of the Walkers, left the base, and Alan was right. I had to hold my breath so I wouldn't smell the horrible stench of rotting carcasses, and hopefully not but most likely, the corpses of actual humans.

"Lucky Daph, with the Airinum mask..." I muttered under my breath.

"Lucky Ava, who doesn't have damaged lungs like I do... be grateful that you can breathe in the first place," Daph whispered to me. I sighed. I guess she's right. I'll deal with what I have.

"Walkers, this isn't Minecraft, we can't build a city in a half-hour! Start looking around for stuff that could be useful to us!" Alan shouted. Us Walkers split up, but Alan stayed by Daph's side. Why didn't she tell me earlier that Alan was her brother?

Alan's POV

The Walkers split up in various directions, and I stayed with Daph. I was planning on looking through the pile of busted vehicles and machinery with her.

While walking there, I couldn't help but hope that the mask I gave Daph is filtering out the horrible stench of rotting stuff (I'm not gonna get into what stuff, but trust me, you DON'T wanna know), along with the harmful
particles in the air left behind from the solar storm.

Once we got to the pile of vehicles turned into scrap metal by the solar storm, we gathered everything we could, and since I know absolutely nothing about how to build a city with the remains of some old vehicles, I sent out a message to the Walkers via their watches, asking if anyone actually knew something about building.

Luckily, some of the Walkers who knew stuff about city-building came to our assistance.

**Timeskip: 15 or 16 days later**

Alan's POV

September came and went. In the first half, we were fighting for our lives, fleeing a base, and waiting through the solar storm. The other half we spent building. We're not even close to finishing the city. I'm hoping October will bring us more luck.

Then, a thought came into my mind.

The Walkers and I are the last people on Earth.

We have so much open to us now.

We can rewrite the rules.

We can repair the damage this planet has suffered through.

We can reshape the future of humanity.

We can reinvent society.

We can change the world.

If we want a different world,

A better world,

Now is our chance to create one.

It WILL be a lot of work, but it'll all be worth it in the end.

Maybe we can have a Walker council for the city or something, made up of Chris, K, Fiona, Daph, the Walkers of Origin and I..? To act as leaders..?

I sent them a message about it. They loved - I mean potatoed - the idea, and are totally on board with it.

I continued to help my fellow Walkers with the city.

**Timeskip: November 1**

Alan's POV

October's gone now, but we got a lot more done on the city. I'm thinking we might be able to finish by next August.

Wait. What about the winter months? Will we just shrug off the cold weather? It can get pretty cold here in Norway in the winter. Or will we take the winter months off, and just 'hibernate' in our base? We won't get anything done, but we won't have to worry about how cold it gets because we'll spend the winter in the base.
I discussed the issue with the rest of the Walkers, and we agreed to start 'hibernating' on the first snowfall of the year.

Five minutes later, some snow started to fall, gently at first, but then it started to snow sideways. Most of the Walkers were only dressed for weather in late August. We ran to the base as fast as our legs could carry us.

Daph's POV

I woke up this morning and remembered that today's my 18th birthday!

I yawned and stretched, before getting out of bed and almost hitting my head on the top bunk while doing so.
I turned on my phone to check the time. 12:17 pm already.

I put my phone back into my pocket, and looked around. I appeared to be the only person in the sleeping quarters.

I decided to go to the main hall to see what the other Walkers were doing. From across the main hall, I saw Alan. We locked eyes for a minute, and Alan gave me a weird look. Then, I remembered that I wasn't wearing my mask. I blushed and went back to the sleeping quarters to get it. I put it on, and went back to the main hall.

I found Alan in the crowd of Walkers walking around in the main hall, and walked over to him.

"So you got my hint," he smirked and pointed at my lower face, hidden by my mask. I nodded.

"Did you know that today's my eighteenth birthday?" I said enthusiastically.

"No, actually, you forgot to mention that," he laughed.

"Oh, I did?" I said, surprised.

"Anyway, happy 18th birthday then," Alan smiled.

"Thanks," I said.
