Chapter Nine

"Dad?!" I squealed, crashing down the tall staircase leading to the second floor.
My father stood in front of the front door, removing his black overcoat since it had gotten a little chilly. His lips upturned into a broad smile as he engulfed me in a bear hug, slightly picking me up off the ground being as small as I was.
He looked the same, same chestnut hair, same green eyes. Once we pulled apart my mom came and hugged my father with a smile, though she wasn't as enthusiastic as I imagined she would be.
My father pecked my mother's lips before loosening their hug.
"What are you doing here Dad?" I asked. "You said you wouldn't be back until next weekend."
"Well... your mother and I have some things to figure out," he said, with a sad smile. "but how are you pumpkin?"
I grinned at my nickname, every year I was paired up with Dad for Halloween pumpkin carving, and the nickname stuck. His British accent made it even more special, no one else could say it the way he could. My father grew up in Blackpool, England, but my mom is American and my sisters and I were raised in Florida.
"I'm okay..." I said, an image of the Dug Out appeared in my mind. "I'm tutoring some friends at our new school."
"Of course you are, with that big brain," Dad laughed. "I'm going to talk with Mum for a bit, I will see you at dinner."
I nodded as my parents walked to their study. I couldn't help but feel worried. Mom was crying... I had almost never seen her cry. It was serious, but I didn't know what was happening.

"You're tutoring Violet again?" Rym complained. "I feel like we never hang out anymore Lils."
"I'm sorry Rym but I promised," I said sadly, getting my books and computer together and putting away. "How about we hang out before then? I don't have to go to her house until eight."
Rym sighed and blew her nose. "Yeah, I'm feeling a lot better. That sounds nice Lily."
"Great." I glanced at my alarm clock that showed it was Friday, seven-thirty am. "Let's get to school."
Rym nodded and followed me outside and into Ana's car. Ana was touching up her makeup-shocker- and texting at the same time.
"Who are you texting?" Rym asked, biting into an apple she grabbed from the kitchen.
"Someone," Ana smirked. "His name's Luke Raven, he may be future Mr. Easton."
I snorted. "You mean YOU might be future Mrs. Raven?"
"Me? Anastasia Raven? No no no. Easton has been my last name my entire life, and it's going to stay that way."
"You're crazy Ana," Rym rolled her eyes. "What does Luke think about this?"
"It's not his job to think, it's his job to kiss me and buy me chocolates. Now let's rock and roll!"
Ana started her car dramatically and pulled out of our driveway.
