Cold, dark, and the sound of screeching metal.

I woke to this wondering where I was. How'd I get there? What is happening?

I could tell I was in some kind of metal container. I could feel the cold metal under my fingers as I felt around for some clue to my whereabouts. The only thing I found was a hog that scared me half to death when it suddenly squealed loudly. I could tell I was moving upwards. I slowly stood up in the darkness feeling around for anything and everything.

I was slammed back down when the container came to a screeching halt. I could hear distant and muffled voices above me. I strained trying to make out any words I could.

"Shut up and open the bloody thing!" A thick accented voice shouted as something above me opened.

I shielded my eyes from the sudden bright light that filled the small space. I felt the cage jostle. Someone had jumped inside with me. I peaked around my fingers the best I could. Thankfully the body before me stood shielding me from the sun. I could see that it was a big, muscular boy about my age.

"You shanks seeing this?" The boy in front of me asked the others staring down at me.

"It's a girl" the thick accented voice said.

I could hear voices quickly talking over one another. The boy in front of me bent down to make it easier for me to see his face. He was cute.

"I'm Gally, lets get you out of here." He gave me a small smile then extended his hand out.

I took it slowly allowing him to help me to my feet. Another boy with dirty blonde hair reached down to lift me out of the box. Once my feet were on solid ground again I instantly felt better. I took in my surroundings.

It was a large flat pasture of land with a small forest towards the back. Surrounding the place was massive stone walls. It was like some kind of prison. I noticed the people around me next. The first important note, I'm the only girl.

"What is going on?" I asked turning to face the group of boys.

"I guess you're our new greenie. Welcome to the Glade." Gally said with a sharp tone.

He turned away from me to help a few other boys pull everything else out of the box. I wasn't sure why Gally had went from being kind to being so sharp with me. I didn't do anything. At least I don't think I did.

"Follow me love I'll introduce you to Alby and we'll give you the tour." The thick accented dirty blonde boy said turning me away from the other boys.

"I'm Newt by the way" he said as we walked towards one of the make shift buildings.

"I'm... I'm..." I stopped walking.

Why can't I think of my name? I have to know my own name. What is it? Why am I drawing a blank?

"It's alright love. The same thing happened to all of us. You'll remember you're name soon." Newt smiled reassuringly at me.

I nodded still unsure but I continued to follow him. We walked inside the larger hut then straight to one of the rooms inside. Newt tapped lightly on the open door to get the older man's attention.

"Hey Alby, got the new greenie." Newt said lightly stepping inside to leave me standing in the door way.

Alby looked up at me but seemed to go into shock for a moment before snapping himself out of it.

"Well I'll be damned. It's been a year and a half and you're the first girl we've had come up in that box." Alby chuckled as he stood.

"I'm Alby leader of the glade. Newt here is my second in command." He walked over to me extending his hand.

I shook it then stepped back out of the room. Alby and Newt both walked out to stand in front of me.

"This building here is the homestead. My office is here and the Med-Jacks work upstairs. I figure I'll get Gally to make you up a room in here. Being the only lady here I'm sure you'll want some privacy." Alby's smile was warm.

"Let's get you acquainted with the place." Alby nodded for me to follow him.

I silently walked behind Alby and Newt as they showed me around the Glade. I could see most of the boys carrying items from the box in the distance. Alby took his time to tell me about everything before he went on to tell me the rules of the Glade. It was all simple enough but I still had so many questions.

Why are we here?

Who put us here?

Why am I the only girl?

Most of it just didn't make sense but I went along with it anyway. Maybe in time I'll understand better.

"I'll leave you with Newt. We have a big celebration tonight all in your honor. I'll see you then." Alby smiled, patted my shoulder, then walked off back towards the homestead.

"Since it's your first day we will start your jobs tomorrow. Each day you'll spend the day doing one of the jobs here until you find the one you're best at. Until then let's go grab Gally so he can get that room made up for you." Newt explained with a charming smile.

I followed the blonde again noticing for the first time that he walks with a limp. It was odd to see but I wasn't going to be rude and ask him about it. We stopped in front of a few of the boys. They were chatting and laughing at someone's joke.

"Hey Gally, Alby needs you to fix up a room in the homestead real quick for our greenie." Newt explained to the other boy who was a good two times bigger than the blonde.

"Are you serious? She too good to sleep in a hammock like the rest of us?" Gally asked harshly glaring in my direction.

"Come on Gally. She's the only girl. She's not gonna feel comfortable sleeping surrounded by a bunch of shanks like you." Newt said sharply.

Gally chuckled darkly as he took a step towards Newt. I could feel the sudden tension. Gally looked ready for a fight. Newt on the other hand looked like he'd be snapped in two easily.

"It's really not that big of a deal. I can sleep in a hammock." I said dryly towards both boys.

"See? I must not be that bad. Do I make you feel uncomfortable princess?" Gally asked sarcastically rolling his head to look at me.

"No, you make me want to punch you in the teeth." I spat back at him letting him know I don't scare that easily.

A few of the boys behind him chuckled but shut up instantly when Gally glared at them.

"You think you're tough greenie? We will see about that at the bonfire." He smiled before shoving past Newt and I.

"What is his problem?" I asked Newt.

"Not sure really. He's always been like that. Sometimes you can catch him in a good mood but the smallest thing can send him into a rage." Newt explained as we walked back towards the main living area of the Glade.

"I'll introduce you to everyone tonight at the bonfire. Until then why don't you head back to the homestead and try to help Gally?" Newt suggested.

I sent him a look saying 'you can't be serious'.

"Humor me" he chuckled nodding for me to go.
