He has never been this close to a fire before and yes, it scares him. But Stan's arm, which he had put around his shoulders a little while ago, helps. He feels as if he is safe as long as they stay in this position. The people he didn't know, teenagers around Stan's age, had brought marshmallows and sticks to put them on. Kyle had taken all of his courage to try roasting one but it fell into the flames and burned. He didn't want to try again, the heat against his body, the licking flames darting into the sky whenever someone would throw in another piece of wood, terrified him so he had crawled back, shrugging with a small smile on his lips when Stan asked him if he really didn't want to try again. But the black haired boy didn't accept that answer and roasted one for Kyle which to the merman was a very brave and sweet gesture. When he tried the gooey thing he gave his best acting like it tasted nice even though he just wanted to spit it right out again. Human food still is a mystery to him. Now they are just sitting there, watching the flames and the waves. Most people have left by now, they took the loud music and gross marshmallows with them. And Kyle can't imagine a nicer place to be in right now than here next to Stan. The boy turns his head to him, as if he has read his thoughts and Kyle stares into stormy blue almond shaped eyes. Those kind of eyes that calm you down with just one glance but also wake up a desire, burning in your stomach, crying for intimacy. "Are you cold?" Kyle wants to say no, because the hot flames and the warm body next to him are almost too much to handle for his skin which is used to cool water carassing it 24/7 but he feels like yes would be the appropriate answer for a human so he just nods slightly. Stan's lips form a warm smile and he takes off his jacket to put it around Kyle's shoulders. It smells like him and the scent makes Kyle's heart flutter. "Thank you." "You're very welcome. Can I...ask you something?" Kyle looks back into his eyes, the shiny spheres that have locked the stormy sea inside of them so that only the soft moon is left. "Of course." Stan clears his throat. "Do you...like guys?" Kyle's eyes widen. He didn't see that question coming and isn't sure what to answer. He had never really cared about love. Sure, once or twice he had met someone attractive who he had dreamed about at night but he had never really liked anyone. But Stan is different. "I...I don't know what I like." "Oh. Okay. And...how would you feel if I...if I was to kiss you right now?" Kyle's heart skips a beat and he can feel himself blush. Stan wants to kiss him? Why? "I...I..." Stan's expression changes. He seems disappointed now. And embarrassed. "I'm sorry, I-" "No, I...I think I'd like that." He looks up again into Kyle's nervous eyes. "You would?" His heart is racing now and all he can do is nod. Stan hesitates for a second but then puts one of his warm hands against his cheek. Is this really happening right now? Maybe this is a mistake. Kyle doesn't know how kissing works. What if he does something wrong? What if it feels bad? But his thoughts aren't stopping Stan's face from slowly coming closer and then, before Kyle can make the mistake of pulling away, two soft lips land on his. He doesn't kiss back right away but then it happens automatically, as if his brain knows exactly what to do. Stan's other hand lands on his waist and pulls him a bit closer. Kyle remembers the tales about mermaids saving sailors or princes from drowning and then falling madly in love with them. But Stan isn't just a prince to him. In this exact moment he is his entire fairytale.
