I awoke early the next morning. I wanted to pull the thin sheet that I had wrapped around myself tighter and go back to sleep. I sighed as I realized that would never happen. I pulled the sheet off of me before placing my bare feet on the cold floor. A chill shot up my spine as soon as my skin came in contact with the cold air.
My maid uniform hung on my door knob. No doubt Phoenix had put it there in the middle of the night. I took the uniform off the hanger and examined it laying on my bed. The uniform was a long-sleeved black dress with a white collar and apron already attached to it. The dress didn't look like it went all the way to the floor, which made me wonder if I had been given the right dress. I then noticed a pair of black, laced hose.
I hesitated, wondering if I could get away with just wearing what I had on right now. I then sighed before I began to take off my shirt and skirt. I folded them neatly, placing them on the shelf in my room. I then grimaced as I turned my attention to the uniform. With another sigh, I began fitting myself into the outfit.
When I was finished, I glanced down at the dress on me. I was thankful about the long sleeves to protect me from the cold weather. However, I wasn't much of a big fan on the puffy dress skirt stopping above my knees. In the past, I would have cared less. Now, though, I knew better. Showing skin was just an unwanted way to excite a vampire, making them want to drink your blood and finish you off.
I heard a voice come in from overhead. I looked up to find a sort of speaker on my ceiling. I slipped on the hose before putting on the black flats that came with the uniform. I listened to the announcement that told all of us to report to the dining room.
The bad thing was that I couldn't remember where the dining room was. I opened the door to my room to find other girls dragging along in the same direction. I closed the door behind me before I began to follow the crowd towards where I hoped was the dining room.
I scanned the other girls' faces to see if anyone of them were familiar to me. Not a single one of them looked like one of the girls from the train nor Mai. I chewed on my nails as I began to get a little nervous.
The hall began to become a little familiar as I moved along. I started to weave myself between the slow moving girls. At the end of the hallway, I saw other slaves swarming towards familiar double doors. I smiled to myself because I had managed to navigate my way to the room, of course with the help of others.
As soon as came in through the doorway, watchers were grabbing us and pulling us in different directions. One had gripped me by my upper arm, but it wasn't a deathly grip like I was used to. I glanced up to see Col holding me.
Col was dressed in a black t-shirt with a leather jacket over it; dark, faded jeans; and black leather combat boots. His chestnut hair was sort of messy, but it didn't affect his looks at all. I noticed that Col wouldn't meet my gaze directly. He just looked straight ahead. Playing the part.
"What's your job?" he asked in an authoritive voice.
"Maid," I answered.
Col pulled me along with him until we came to another group of slaves. He sent a quick glance around us before looking down at me.
"Where have you been assigned?" he said in a low voice.
"Third floor of the go-between," I said, quietly.
Col's eyebrows furrowed. "The library?"
I nodded. Col looked around us again, He finally gave me a slight nod of his head before he started to walk off. Before he could, I stopped him by stepping towards him. It would have been very unwise to touch him in this setting to get his attention.
