I sprung forth, jolting awake from my slumber. My heart was pounding furiously in my chest from how shaken I was.
Why am I not dead?
I surveyed the familiar surroundings of my room. My eyes them switched down to my simple cot with a thin blanket draped over me.
How did I even get here?
I let out a groan as I let my head fall back against the pillow. This had to be the millionth time I've awoke in my room not being able to remember anything. It felt like every night I was either blacking out or being put to sleep ever since I've arrived here.
"Why can't I just go to sleep like a normal person?" I asked myself.
When events from last night flooded my head, my hand shot up to my neck. I felt for puncture wounds but found none.
Why hadn't he bitten me? Unless... he didn't take my blood in exchange for Mai's life.
At that thought, I sprung out of bed and raced down the hall. I didn't slow down until I stopped in front of Mai's bedroom.
I began to furiously knock on the door until the door finally opened. "I'm coming, Grayson-"
Her annoyed tone was clipped short when she saw me standing outside her door.
Before I could open my mouth to speak, I was tackled in a bear-hug. The next thing I knew, Mai was swatting at me.
"Don't you ever do that again!" she scolded.
I held my hands up in surrender, and Mai stopped her swings. I laughed.
"Glad to know I was missed so," I teased.
She rolled her eyes. "That suicide mission of yours wasn't wise at all." She held up a hand before I could protest. "Grayson already told me your reasons."
I groaned. "Traitor. He was supposed to keep you away, not tell you my reasons."
Mai let out a dry laugh. "Believe me, he's paying for not taking you away from that place before you crossed over."
"Don't be so hard on him. It was you or me. He was only trying to save you, and I saved him from having to make that choice."
Mai didn't say anything for a long time.
"Anyway, what have I missed while I've been in the beasts' lair?"
Mai shrugged. "Not much. Just another working day."
I sighed. "I hate that I keep blacking out. Lately, I've been waking up unable to remember anything after certain points."
Mai's eyebrows knitted together as she bit her bottom lip. "What happened last night when you crossed over?"
"I remember the watchers leading us to the crossover point. Some watcher took me to the other world. When I was led to another room, the watcher injected me with something that made me drowsy. One of the vampires came in. He talked for awhile, trying to find out why I was there. I told him that I would give my blood in order to save someone I love. Surprisingly, he accepted my deal. But, he didn't take my blood; at least, I don't think he did. The next thing I remember is waking up in my room just now."
Mai didn't speak when I finished.
"I wonder why he didn't drain me," I thought out loud.
