With one lost soul in the garden, life dragged on, all of the pure noticing their missing link but knowing nothing could truly be done. Calum blended into his life, forced into an even more submissive state than he knew through trial and error;errors that showed on his body and scared him in the night.
But, Calum is happy. That's what he begs you to remember because it's the truth. He's happy, even if he does have to wake up at five in the morning to make breakfast and start on his chores. He likes cleaning because it makes Ashton happy and the world is just a better place for Calum when Ashton is happy.
He slides out of bed, careful of the door creaking as he eased it open. His eyes glanced over to Ashton, who was still sleeping peacefully without him lying there, and sighed in relief. Stepping out of the room, Calum glanced down the dark hall and felt an eerie feeling creep up his back.
He hated the dark so much but it'd get better if he could just turn the light on, which was only placed at the end of the hall. He tried not to let his mind run on scenarios he built up about someone lurking in the shadows, his feet pattering across the floor lightly due to his socks to make it to the light switch faster. He fumbled with it for a moment, turning the dial and lighting up the hallway just barely, enough to etch out shapes if he squinted.
He couldn't have the light too bright. Ashton wouldn't like that. He made due though, griping the railing of the stairs as he walked down the steps that had gaps between them. He made it to the kitchen safely, turning the lights up on the marble kitchen as he glanced behind him, hoping he wasn't too loud and that Ashton was still resting up the stairs.
He moved after a few moments, popping the fridge open and grabbing out what he needed after checking the list Ashton made for breakfast. He worked quietly, the house silent outside of the mouse-like noises of dishes clattering, fire sizzling, and Calum's feet padding across the floor as he worked fervently.
He caught sight of the clock, smiling when he sat it was almost six. He gathered the food onto a tray and carefully walked up the steps back to the room. He turned off the lights in the hall, praying that Ashton didn't see a strip of light under the door. He struggled with the knob for a moment, finally pushing it open after a minute or so.
Setting the tray on the mini table to the side, Calum took a shaky breath before softly nudging at Ashton's sleeping form. He whispered softly for his boyfriend to wake up, flinching back slightly when Ashton did open his eyes, blinking a few times until he caught sight of Calum watching him closely.
Calum always was on guard when Ashton was waking up, it was involuntary but the action was embedded into his subconscious, like blinking. The little voice in the back of his head warned him to stay alert so he could, at least, brace himself if Ashton did lash out at him. He never knew how Ashton felt in the mornings, sometimes it was a good start but others it wasn't.
His fear didn't show on his face or in his eyes but it was there, engraved in his heart and flowing through his veins. It's what kept him alive most days, just like blood kept him alive everyday.
