Two years after the incident at the park, I had finally turned sixteen, meaning that I could legally own a pokemon. My mother had always reminded me of the responsibility of caring for a pokemon every time I expressed my interest in wanting to train one.
I knew of the responsibility required to look after pokemon. Recognised trainers including Kanto Elite Four Lance and Unova Champion Alder had always stressed the importance of maintaining the health and well being of their pokemon.
In most cases, this was enough to deter young trainers from hastily picking up a pokemon too soon. However, this only fueled my excitement for what the future had in store for me. I had researched into the pokemon that were given out by Professor Sycamore all the way in Lumiose City and was confident that my predetermined choice was suitable for me.
That being said, Lumiose City would have been the furthest I would have travelled on my own, without anyone accompanying me. Naturally, this caused my mother to worry about my safety but I assured her that I would have picked my starter pokemon in no time and that I would be just fine.
As I turned to the mirror by the door, my mother walked to my side. She ruffled my wine purple hair, kissing me on my forehead as I turned to the front door.
One emotional farewell later and I had exited the door. My next door neighbour, Calem, had also turned sixteen the week before and was preparing to set of on his journey. As I stepped out of the front door, I was instantly met by his face in the driveway.
"Hey, heard you were getting your starter pokemon as well today. Thought it would be best if we set off together, considering Lumiose City is kind of far away and all."
I thought over the request but more than graciously accepted, knowing that we would be better off if we were together.
We stepped out of the front gates and were met by a group of people, none of whom I recognised. I guessed they must have been Calem's friends as they all seemed to greet him with kind faces.
"Hey guys, what are you doing all the way out here?"
Just ahead of us was Aquacorde town where I guessed most of them lived. There could only have been five minutes of walking between the two towns so they were basically neighbours.
In response to Calem, a short brunette spoke up. Her emerald eyes shone bright, burning with an evident passion, "We were on our way to you Calem! Professor Sycamore entrusted us with something important."
The comment was all that was needed to get Calem excited. "Really! Come on then, show me what it is!"
Just as he finished, the black haired boy coughed gently as if trying to calm himself down. He turned to me, a look of empathy on his face.
"Sorry about this, you must be confused. After all, you've never met any of these guys before."
I nodded in agreement, waiting for him to elaborate.
Calem introduced his group of friends, six in total. The first boy he introduced had long ginger hair that covered a lot of his face. He had quite a small frame but nevertheless was seemingly confident with his friends. His name was Trevor.
The second boy was quite tall and in contrast had a large frame. His black hair was cut short and his unwavering smile and the occasions that he cracked a joke indicated that he was apparently the joker of the group. Still, Tierno was well-mannered and his jokes didn't seem to go too far.
Calem then introduced the girl who responded to him earlier as Shauna. She had lightly tanned brown skin and once again wore a bright smile on her face. I was starting to sense a pattern here, this group didn't lack any sort of smiles.
