Around an hour later, the two of us stepped through the gate to South Lumiose City. If the Professor's lab wasn't right next to the entrance, I'm sure we would have gotten lost in the big city.
We were greeted at the entrance by a man who I recognised from the internet to be Professor Sycamore, the pokemon professor. He invited us in, recognising us as new trainers.
"I guess you guys are here for your starter pokemon right?"
Dratini had fallen asleep on the journey and insisted on sleeping in my opened bag. She made herself comfortable underneath the food, money and camping supplies. Even with her in the bag, I didn't notice an increase in weight due to how light she was.
"Yeah, we were with our friends but there weren't enough starter pokemon for us," Elaine spoke up with me nodding in agreement.
"No need to worry. In fact, both Professor Birch and Professor Kukui have sent over some pokemon for new trainers to take. But if you feel inclined to take the usual pokemon on offer, then feel free to do so."
Elaine and I exchanged brief looks. I hadn't planned for something like this to happen. Right now, we would be spoiled for choice as there were quite a few pokemon available for us.
Professor Sycamore led us to one of the side rooms which opened out to what looked like a pokemon conservation centre. There were numerous fire, water and grass type pokemon running around, talking to each other and some were just relaxing.
"Feel free to have a walk around the area. You're going to want to feel comfortable with your partner so take your time."
With that Elaine and I split up. I didn't have a specific pokemon in mind considering more options were opened up to us. A lot of the pokemon looked in my direction with happy faces. Some offered to play with me but I respectfully declined.
I encouraged Dratini to play with some of the pokemon but she was more than happy to stay on my shoulders. As we got further from the entrance, we entered an area where a large tree grew out of the glass roof of the centre.
Out of the corner of my eye, I spotted a pokemon leaning against the tree on one of the top branches. I couldn't get a clear view of the pokemon but I was determined to know how and why they had climbed that high.
As I stared at the pokemon, feeling its yellow eyes bore into my skull. I felt a wave of determination and passion emanating from the pokemon. From being around so many from a young age, I felt that I had a good understanding of what a pokemon was thinking and feeling by getting a clear look at them.
From the top branch, the pokemon jumped down, landing right in front of Dratini and I. I knelt down to get a closer look at the unfamiliar pokemon. It's green scaly skin covered most of its body and a red underbelly covered the rest. He had a medium length, dark green tail that split into two at the base.
The pokemon had its arms crossed, clearly not wanting to play around like the other pokemon. Immediately, I could tell what this pokemon was feeling.
"You don't want to play with the other because you want to get stronger right?"
The grass pokemon snapped his head toward me as if I had hit the nail on the head. He thought about his response before nodding gently. Dratini jumped down from my shoulder and had a brief exchange with the pokemon.
"You see, I'm trying to get stronger as well and I won't be able to do it without pokemon like you. Would you like to join us on our journey?"
The grass pokemon unfolded his arms, letting the tension in his body flow out. He thought his response over for a second before nodding in agreement. Dratini let herself down as the two of them began a conversation about something I couldn't understand. We made out way back to the entrance where Elaine was waiting with her pokemon of choice.
