The battle with Grant was decided quickly. Both Slowpoke and Treecko held an advantage over the rock type specialist so the fight was decided quickly. As Viola did, Grant commented on how well I must have trained my pokemon to end the battle so swiftly. I took the compliment but assured him that it was down to the hard work from the pokemon that ensured a certain victory.
We had passed through Geosenge Town with little interference from wild pokemon and other trainers who wished to battle. One thing that I noted was the unusual presence of uniformed people around the town. They didn't approach me in any way so I kept my head down and passed through on the way to Shalour City, our next destination.
A few days after our short stop in Geosenge, we found ourselves at the entrance to the isolated city. The whole place was situated on a beach, on the west coast of Kalos, similar to Cyllage City. In the centre of everything, on its own small island, a huge tower protruded from the sandy ground with only a stone walkway connecting it to the mainland.
"Are you guys alright if we check out that big tower?"
All four pokemon nodded, equally interested by the structure. As we crossed the walkway, I could barely make out some familiar faces through the huge arched entrance to the tower.
A few minutes later, we had entered the tower which was illuminated by the sun shining through the large windows.
"Hey neighbour!"
Calem's familiar voice caught my attention, making me turn around to face where his voice was coming from. He was stood with two of the girls that he had introduced me to at the start of our journey. I recognised the two as Shauna and Serena, the two patiently waiting by the door to the central building of the tower.
"Fancy seeing you here, right? We're here to learn about a recent discovery called mega evolution. Cool right?"
Calem's excitable nature never failed to amuse me as I nodded in response to his questions. Most of my childhood was spent watching pokemon battles which, of course, featured mega evolution. From what I had seen, only the most experienced trainers were able to harness the power of mega evolution.
Little was known about its origin but through the deep bond shared between trainer and partner, the phenomenon known as mega evolution was possible as it unlocked a hidden strength deep with the pokemon's heart that only the strong bond could bring out.
The heavy wooden door swung open, revealing an elderly man whose thin light blonde hair covered little of his balding head. The young girl beside him shared the exact same hair colour so I guessed that they were related in some way.
"Greetings young trainers, I suppose you're here to learn about mega evolution?"
The other three nodded excitedly while I tried to get Growlithe and Treecko to calm down so that the talk wasn't interrupted.
"Well this is the Tower of Mastery. In the past, scholars travelled from not only all around Kalos but all around the world to study the feat of mega evolution here due to an apparent surge of power in this area."
"Come on gramps, we can cut the boring history lesson. Do you guys want to see mega evolution in action?"
The sudden opportunity to witness the phenomenon first had sounded very appealing. I had only come for a gym battle but I was definitely getting more than what I had wanted.
Once more, the lemon haired girl spoke up, "Alright, I'm going to need a volunteer then."
Among the three people stood ahead of me, they had a little debate as to who should battle the gym leader, Korrina here, in the Tower of Mastery.
