Chapter 6

Fifteen days

Fifteen days...it's fifteen days since we've been stuck on this godforsaken island. And every day, Joseph has become more and more irritable, and rightfully so. We've stayed on this island next to this giant SOS sign, and not a single plane has come by.

I once suggested that we were dead, and this is our own personal hell, as a joke, of course. But, Joseph didn't seem to find it funny because he said a slur of curse words and left for the day. I didn't see him until dark that day.

I stared down at Charlie. He's been my only slither of happiness through this all. But I do feel bad for the small pup, he's living off of pineapples and whatever foods Joseph finds for the day that's he's willing to give up. Still no fish... but we at least have mangos now.

"Joseph," I shout as I finish putting the finishing touches on the net I've constructed out of vines. This should help Joseph with his fishing endeavors. "Here," I lift the net up so he can get a better look at it. I've spent days making this. Instead of making our hut, I felt as though the food was a bit more important than some makeshift shelter.

I weaved the vines together in a certain way that mimicked the way fishers catch fish. It should make fishing more manageable. Instead of Joseph standing in the water for hours throwing a spear around. We can place this in the water, and catch as many as we need in a few hours.

He takes it out of my hands, "so this is what you were making for so long... a net?" he questions.

I smile, "yes, a net. Now, you can get some fish for us for dinner, isn't that right Charlie," I rub the back of his head as his face is in a pineapple. He looks up and barks making us both chuckle.

"Thank you," he smiles holding it up. My heart stops for a second when I see this. Joseph smiling? "I'm going to try it out."

I stare at Joseph's back as he walks towards the sea. With his mile walk every day, swimming, and an all-fruit diet has done something to his body. The flat stomach, with little to no ads, has transformed. He probably doesn't notice, since the lack of mirrors we posses. But Joseph, and I hate to admit it, has turned into something worth actually drooling at.

Lately, I find myself looking at him more often when he goes out fishing. The way his muscles flex, the cold water hitting him gets all wet. His tanned skin... Charlie barks snapping me out of the trance that is Joseph's body.

"Yes, Charlie?" I coo down at him. He eyes the pineapple next to me, "Is that what you want?" If Joseph manages to actually catch some then this one pineapple would mean nothing.

I stare at Charlie's wagging tail, it should be fine. "Heel," I command. I hand him the pineapple. He looks up at me, his long tongue covered in saliva. "Eat, Charlie." He quickly stuffs his face in the sweet fruit I've provided him. Since the first night we got him, I've been training Charlie the basic commands. Heel, and sit, so far he's almost got the two down.

The only problem, with the sitting down part is that he only sits on the sand.

I look at the half-finished bed, I was working on before the net ideas came to me. "I better finish this up, I have to make two of them." It would be a lot easier if we shared one...

Joseph and I on a small bed, together under the stars. Who knows what could happen...

I continue working on the bed, cutting the wood to match each other perfectly with the makeshift ax I made with vine, sticks, and the sharpest, biggest rock I could find.

"Yes!" Joseph screams loud enough for me and Charlie to stand up. "Alice!" he shouts running to us with a net with a bunch of fish. "Look! Look! Your net worked!" He runs towards me and engulfs me in a hug.

His wet bare chest is pressed against me with only his thin cloth between us. Joseph pulls away from me, my heart is beating like crazy. For some reason, I don't want to look him in the eyes. "Look at this!" Joseph shouts for joy. "Start up the fire, I'm going to find some sharp rocks and fill up the water holder you made for lunch today."

"Great," I smile crossing my arms to cover my probably exposed breast. I watch Joseph go into the woods, then I finally exhale.

Dammit... Joseph. I'm glad you're finally having some semblance of happiness but holding me like that is not good for my heart. I grab our makeshift fire starter, using the wood we collect every morning I make the fire. Charlie is still afraid of it, he lets out a low growl when he sees me working.

The constant struggle of starting a fire has tone my arms in ways that I didn't know was possible. My once perfectly polished nails are now chipped. I try to avoid direct reflections as much as possible. I'm too scared to see what I might see.

The fire erupted, I throw in the wood making the fire higher. Joseph should be back by now... the waterfall isn't that far, it should take him ten minutes, twenty max.

I stand from the sand, I should go look for him. What if something happened? I dust off my legs, staring my search in the forest. These bigger footprints are without a doubt Joseph, it looks as if he went to the waterfall but where is he.

"Alice! Alice!" A loud male voice shouts in the distance. "Alice!"

I know that voice, it's Joseph! My legs pick up speed under me towards the noise. "Joseph! I'm coming!" Charlie runs behind me keeping up with my pace. Where is he? What's wrong? I hope he's not hurt.

I quicken my running, suddenly the tall trees seem further away and my surroundings are dirt.

"Great," Joseph mutters next to me. "You're stuck too."
