Chapter 10

The plane is a smaller one, one that couldn't fit more than ten people. "We should check it out," I declare. We might be able to use some of the debris for something useful. I take a step forward, but Joseph stops me.

"Alice, this could be bad."

"Bad? What do you mean?"

"Alice, this is a plane crash, which means there could be, well. It could be some," he starts. A crash plane means people were on it.

"Dead bodies," I finish.

He nods his head, "so I think you should probably stay back. Just in case," he adds. I merely nod my head at Joseph, he's right. I don't have the stomach to see a dead body, a real dead body.

Joseph eases into the plane; his body disappears the more he goes inside. "Joseph? Is there a dead body?" I call out.

"No," he announces. "But I did find something." What the hell is he talking about? I ease into the old plane. The walls are caved in, and sharp bits of glass covers the floor. We can use these chairs for a bed. Goodbye, straw beds, and hello cushions! I run a hand over the pillows, they look comfortable enough.

"Alice!" Joseph shouts from the front of the plane.

"What?!" I shout back as I begin to tug at a nearby chair. This thing is really on there. But this will not stop me. Chair, you are coming back with me.

"Look!" I stop pulling at the cursive chair. Chair, you're coming with me whether you like it or not. Now, what the hell is Joseph spouting for me to look at? I ease through the plane towards Joseph, who is hunched over, staring at something.

"Joseph? What is it?" He moves over, he points to a small box. The box has a series of buttons and a mic! A mic?

"Do you know what this is Alice," he gleams. I know what that magic black box is. It's our chance out of here, it's a goddamn radio.

"A radio!" I shout. A radio! A goddamn radio! I've never seen Joseph smile so much before.

"I have no idea. I found it here, and I didn't want to do anything and," Joseph smiles. "Shit, Alice, this is a chance. The chance we need to get off the island."

I smile up at Joseph, "well. Let's see if this thing works," I announce. I look at the big black button that clearly seems to be an on button. By the love of God, please don't be one of those complicated radios that requires the plane to be on.

I slowly ease my finger towards the button. I close my eyes, I can't bear to look. My thumb brushes over the button, and I hear a click. I open my eyes, a series of lights begin to blink.

"Joseph!" I tap the larger man that's next to me. "Joseph! Joseph!"

"What?" He mutters. I look up to him, his eyes are shut as well.

"Look," I smile.

Joseph slowly opens his eyes, I can see his eyes basically fall out his socket. "Alice!" He reaches for the tuner. He gets on his knees, and I do the same. He keeps a close ear to the radio. He slowly turns it, static comes out. "Alice, hand me the mic."

I pick up the small round device and give it to Joseph. "Hello!" he shouts as he turns the radio dial. "Hello!" he repeats.

"Hello!" A person shouts over the radio.

"Hello!" We both shout as we rush closer to the mic.

"Hello! The day is October fourteenth, It's a hot day here in Hamilton, Bermuda. There's a festival going on tonight." The radio guy continues to talk. We need to get patched or get in touch with someone that can help us.

Joseph sighs. "Well, at least it works," he smiles. "And we know what day it is. And now we sorta know where we are."

I nod my head, "that's a start."

"A start?! We're basically at the finish line," he smiles. "We can finally go home, I bet." He tunes the radio, "I bet that in the next few days, we'll be off this island and eating a full course meal that we dreamed up."

I smile, food! Hot food that I don't need to cook. "Okay! Tune that radio and get us the hell out of here."

Joseph turns the radio dial, and static instantly comes out. "Hello!" he shouts into the mic. Come on, please, if there is a God. Please, please get us the fuck off this island. "Hello!" He repeats.

The static continues as Joseph continues to turn the dial. I hear a small hello, followed by static. "Joseph, did you hear that? Go back!"

Joseph turns back the dial, "4-11-12," the monotone voice says over the radio. "Where is your location?"

"Hello!" Joseph says before I can react.

"Hello? Who am I speaking with?"

Joseph lets out a small whistle, "my name is Jo-" before he can get the rest of his name out. The radio turns off. "No!" Joseph clicks the radio on the button vigorously. "No! No! No!" He continues to shout.

The radio continues to stay off. "Fuck!" Joseph yells. "Fuck! Fuck! Fuck Fuck! We're never getting off this fucking island!" Joseph flings the mic, ripping it from the radio box. The mic breaks on impact, and I flinch.

I raise my hand at the seething man, "Joseph, you have to calm down."

"Calm down? How am I supposed to calm down?! Our one chance off this goddamn island has gone to shit!" His nose is flared, and it seems as if steam is going to come out of him soon. There's nothing to say, he's right. That was our one chance. Joseph runs a hand through his hair and sighs. "I'm going to take these chairs back to camp," he grumbles, picking up to chairs and walking back towards camp.

I watch Joseph's silhouette get smaller as he descends towards camp. "Shit," I mutter to myself as I look at our one chance of getting off this goddamn island. Shit! I slam my fist against the nearby wall, and a bag falls on the ground. "What is this?" I scramble towards the brown duffle bag. I take a seat on the ground and slowly open the zipper.

Inside the bag were a few things that could be of use. A water bottle, a big bottle of alcohol, a solar-powered game boy. A blanket, some clothes, and a hand radio.

I run my hand over the radio. Solar-powered... solar powered!

I stuff the bag with everything I collected and run down the hill.

"Joseph! Joseph!" I call out with the satchel pressed on my back. Joseph turns towards me; his face is glum as he stands tall, staring at the ocean. Without a second thought, I jump. I jump into his arms and catch him.

Joseph lifts me high, "what's gotten into you?"

I dig into the bag and take out the radio. "Look!" I squeal as Joseph continues to hold me in the air.

Joseph's eyes widen, "is that?"

I nod my head, "yes, it is!" I smile.
