Chapter 15

I suck in my breath as I look down at my potential killer. He's a bit older, with unruly cut blonde hair. He's wearing a pair of pants, cut at the bottom to expose his legs with no shirt. He's lean, with tan skin from the long hours of being in this sun for god knows how long.

I hold in my breath, how long could he have been living here on the island? He gets up from the chair and goes to his bookcase, he takes out one of the older books and goes outside. Nows my chance to get out of here. I descend down the ladder, taking extra precautions so he won't hear me.

He's outside with a book in hand, sitting in front of the ocean reading. I can imagine how many times he read that book, each of the books on the bookcase was riddled with sand and the papers looked as if it had been turned hundreds of times. I take a step forward, my back sticks close to the walls.

I have to get back to Joseph to tell him about what I saw and that I wasn't crazy. There is someone here, and potentially by the looks of things, there could be many more. There's no way he could have built all of this by himself. I take one step down the steps, it makes a small creek. I stop in my tracks and look off at the stranger whose back is turned away from me, who is too enamored with the book in his hand.

Another step, nothing. Then the last and my feet touch the sand. I have to get out of here, I turn my attention to the tunnel entrance. Once, I get out of his range I'm going to hall ass out of here and go back to Joseph. I cautiously step back, the sand makes a light crunching sound as I walk. I continue my back peddle until my feet can't keep up with my mind and I fall making a loud sound.

He turns towards me, my heart drops.

I didn't get quite a good look at him earlier, but he looks rustic sorta like the men you would see chopping down wood in the middle of nowhere. And I'm his next piece of wood he's going to chop down. His eyes widen when he makes eye contact with me.

"Wha-"

Before he gets a word out, I turn and run away. My chest sticks out, as I run through the tunnel. I turn to see him chasing after me. "Get away from me!" I shout continuing my running now past the waterfalls. If he catches me, that's it. I'm done for, I'll never see Joseph again.

He'll be all alone.

I quicken my pace down the hill, through the trees. He won't be able to see me if I go this way. I take my bow off of my back, if I, even so, hear him. I grab the arrow and hold it to the bow preparing myself to shoot at any moment. I turn and look around aiming my bow at any tree or shadow that looks like it could be him.

I don't want to kill him, hell I don't even want to hurt him but, I'll be damned if I let my guard down around him. I hold my breath and stand in the spot for a total of five minutes. If he' still following me, I would have seen him by now.

I survey the area, for him. I think I lost him.

I lower my bow and put it on my back. I need to get back to Joseph and tell him everything. I quicken my pace down the trail, my stick markers are there indicating I'm home. Joseph is there, he's waiting for me.

I start to run, with all of my might. I can barely feel my legs but I have to see him.

"Joseph! Joseph!" I scream. He turns towards me and raises his eyebrow.

"Oh, you got the chicken I see," he smiles. What? I turn and the dead turkey is still attached to me. He jumps down from the rocks and approaches me.

"No, I mean yes. I did get the chicken but" I heave. "There's a guy."

"A guy" I watch Joseph pinch the bridge of his nose. He thinks I'm crazy. " Alice," he sighs. "I thought we settled that you imagined that."

I stare up at Joseph, it wasn't a monkey or some weird piece of wood that's shaped like a man. It was a person, with two arms, two legs and a mouth that spoke to me. "no! I didn't imagine it. I saw him, with my own two eyes. He spoke to me and chased me through the forest. Plus Joseph, he has this surreal house behind the waterfall and he has this bookcase full of books and and..."

Joseph put his hands on my shoulders, I look up to him. His face is stern, he believes me. "Alice, breathe." I inhale and then exhale just as he asked me to do. "Good, Now where is this place?"

"About ten miles out," I blurt out.

Joseph mutters to himself, low enough for me unable to hear him. "Let's go." Joseph picks up his stick that is settled next to his bed. "Alice, lead me to them."

"Okay," Charlie perks up from under the shade. "Stay," I command. If anything happens to us, I want Charlie to at least be all right. I look at Joseph, he tightens his grip on the staff and bites his bottom lip. He's scared, and rightfully so. We have no idea what we're walking into.

Joseph and I continue up the trail, I stay close to him. Pointing out the correct direction to get to him. If he's alone, then we can question him. Figure out how the hell he got here and how long he's been here. Joseph looks back at me, "you said he was blonde?"

"Yeah, he's blonde with tan skin and badly cut hair. He has a beard, much longer than one I've ever seen in person." Joseph nods his head. We approach the waterfall, "it's behind here."

Joseph walks ahead, I stay close behind him. If he stops I'll run right into him. He side-eyes me as I ready the bow the closer we get. I'm not a good shot but I'll at least injure a few of them.

"I think there's more than one there," I add. The structure he built takes more than one person to do it." Joseph tightens his hold on his spear.

"Did you see any weapons there?"

"No, but he saw me so I imagine he prepared something. I can't imagine any instance he wouldn't." Joseph stops in his tracks and curses.

He turns towards me, "when we get here, you stay behind me and when I tell you to run, go" he commands.

"What? But Joseph, what if there's more?"

"Then, there are more. Alice, I want you to go as fast as possible and hide in the caves.

"But-" I start before he opens his mouth again.

"Please don't argue with me about this Alice. I don't want you to get hurt so please stay behind me."

I take a step back, this is the first time he's ever looked so scared. But, instead of asking for my help, he's putting my well-being above all. My heart skips a beat. I don't want to leave him, what if they hurt him. I don't know what I would do if anything happened to you, Joseph.

I'd lose my mind.

"Alice," he pleads.

"Okay," I agree. He turns and I grab his arm for him to stare at me. His beautiful eyes that I found myself waiting for him to open stares right at me. I swallow the spit in my mouth, "make sure you come back to me if anything happens."

Joseph grabs my hand, "I will." He squeezes it lightly, and I feel weightless. The unspoken confirmation sent chills down my body.

He quickly let my hand go and eased himself behind the waterfall and I follow close behind. He takes a step back when he sees the endless tally marks indicating probably how long this guy has been here. We continue the track inside until we get to the open area.

Sitting in the chair, with a coconut in his hand and a huge smile on his face is the other survivor.
