Chapter 19

"Hey Finn," I shout with a humorous tone. I lay on the piece of wood carved into a surfboard made by Finn. I feel the small pricks on my flat stomach. "Be on the lookout for any waves," I smile.

"Will do! You're doing great by the way."

My eyes avert to Joseph who jumped off of his set of rocks. His fishing rod no longer in his hands and his brown eyes bore into me. I can see the fear, the worried look he always has when I'm doing anything mildly dangerous, anything that's some semblance of fun. He's such a killjoy sometimes.

His eyes widen, his nose flares and one of his legs take a step forward to show he's ready to run if necessary. If the surfboard flips over he's going to dive right in and save me if necessary. I adjust myself more in the center of the board. You can do this Alice, Joseph won't need to save you. You are a flamingo. You are balanced, hell you're the goddess of balance and poise.

"Alice!" Joseph shouts which makes me fully turn to the shirtless man. A small blush creeps onto my face as I see his chest. "Get down from there. You're going to hurt yourself."

"I'm fine!" I shout back. I look back at the calm waters. Focus Alice, do not embarrass yourself. Don't fumble this, you've been practicing on the sands. A strong stance, be confident, don't let the waves take you with it. Don't prove Joseph right, and fall off of this surfboard. "Just watch me!"

"A wave is coming Alice," Finn calls out. I turn my head. I breathe in and get up from my laying position and stand. The board moves under me causing me to wobble. I extend my arms to balance myself on the moving board. The water hits my back. "Just relax," I tell myself. We're going to ride this wave-like those guys on the sports channel that I never watched and flicked through. I take a breath before I feel the board begin to move at a faster rate.

I lower myself, to strengthen my stance on the board. "Alice you're doing it!" Finn shouts making me smile.

Finn, the castaway man is now someone I can call a friend in the last thirty days we've been stranded. Between, his willingness to share his canned goods, his books and knowledge of the island. He's a reliable and valuable asset to team Stranded. Although, his blundering to himself and occasional outbursts have been a common stitch that is Finn that has yet to subside making it hard for us to really speak to him in fears of him offing himself. Joseph made an attempt to talk about it but it's always brushed off by Finn with a small chuckle and a new topic of conversation.

"Joseph! Joseph look!" I shout. The brooding man places his hands on his hips and watches me. I see a smile creep on his face the closer I get to the shoreline. "Cowabunga!" I scream as the wave takes me closer and closer to the shoreline until the board hits the sand. "That was totally awesome!" I yelp jumping off the board and onto the sand.

Finn approaches me followed by Joseph. I grab my hair and ring it off the ocean's sandy water. "Did you guys see that? Joseph! Did you see that? See! Told you so!" I laugh. "I told you I could do it. I bet you're totally jealous of how awesome I am. I'm a surfing God!"

His lips go flat then he looks at me. "Good job Alice."

Those three words shocked me, instead of a backward comment or snide remark. He gave me a compliment, acknowledgment for my success in something worthwhile. I look up to the man, whose beard is fully grown out now. The white t-shirt he wore under his dress shirt is now filled with holes and discarded onto the rocks. His slacks are cut shorter.

"Oh! You recognize my pure awesomeness. Man, it took you long enought. After all this time Mr.Grumpy can give me a compliment. Who knew it was me kicking that waves ass for you to do it."
