Chapter 24
Silence, not a single word was spoken when the helicopter descended onto the island. Joy, something I thought I would feel when I got off the island is mixed with nausea that comes from being away from Joseph. I won't see him every day anymore. I won't have the pleasure of waking up and being able to see his sleeping face.
No longer will we have our carefree days.
It didn't take them long to get to us, to find us. Half a day, six hours he said when we got on the helicopter. It explained why no one was able to find us. We were too far out, from any usual helicopter rotation. Charlie sits on my lap, he shakes as we go higher and higher in the sky until out little island looks like I hold him tight to make sure he doesn't escape out of the door and fall to his untimely death. Charlie, I snuggle him and avoid the eyes of the man not seven hours ago who was ready to take me for his own.
"How did you two survive so long?" The pilot asks us.
He looks over to me. Words refuse to come out of my mouth. I don't know why, the answer is a simple one. We worked together, listened to one another. It started off slow and then slowly it turned into a partnership. A partnership, where no words needed to be spoken for us to understand one another.
"Luck, and a whole lot of trial and error." Luck? I guess he's right. I was lucky enough to be on this island with him.
"Well, God bless you two. The lord made a miracle happen."
A miracle, I look up at Joseph. A miracle with the expense of my heart. I look out the window down at the sea. All night, we'd paddle these waters to get stranded on an island. If only we'd turned, talked things out. We wouldn't be in this situation.
I would be finishing my master's program and working on some crazy project that would help thousands. Maybe be apart of the peace core for a while.
I sit back and enjoy the feeling of cushioned seats. This feels better than the almost decade-old mattress and the chared plane chairs. "Hey," the pilot shouts over the sounds of the thousands pound helicopter that flies through the wind. He digs in his glove compartment. "I have a granola bar. It only one but I think you guys need the nutrition more than I do."
Joseph takes the bar made of oats and chocolate. He begins to break it but stops. "Here, you can have it. It's chocolate, your favorite." I stare at the small food that would give me a bit of satisfaction. I extend my hand and take the bar.
Grains and chocolate, a granola bar. Something that I wouldn't get for myself if I had the luxury of going to a grocery store. I take a bite, a small one. I instantly taste the sweetness of the chocolate. Chocolate, sweet yet bitter with a nutty flavor. I chew slowly and swallow. One more bite, I take another and this one makes my eyes well up.
"Is it good?" Joseph asks ending my bit of happiness.
Shattered, broken, the chocolate blanket is now gone and replaced with that feeling of Joseph caring for me again. "Very," I cough. "Very very good."
"I'm glad," he smiles. "I remember that you would often dream of Charlie of the Chocolate factory. That one scene in particular where the kid got full-on chocolate but that kid was you. This isn't a fountain of chocolate but it's the first step." He chuckles a bit and watches me finish the bar.
Again, that smile. That damn smile, it ruins me every time. Please stop being nice to me. Stop caring, stop being so chivalrous to me. I stare outside, the water turns to grass, and quickly after it's black with a yellow circle with a giant H in the middle. The helicopter stops and slowly descends to the ground.
