Chapter 16
Joseph tightens his hold on the spear. He quickly glances back at me, he uses his arm to cover me from the strange man's field of view. I place a hand over his back, as I look to the man. He slowly places the coconut in his hand onto the ground. He attempts to get up from the chair, making me clench my weapon.
"Stay where you are," Joseph barks. His words are harsh. I feel the rumble of his words on my fingers from the vibrations of his spine.
The stranger raises his hands and falters back into his chair. He stretches his legs far from the chair. He tilts his head to get a view of me. Joseph takes notice and pulls me back further behind him so I can escape his eyesight.
"What's your name?" Joseph snarls.
"Fin, Fin J. Wright. The second," he adds. "And you?"
Fin J. Wright? What a weird name.
I'm not telling you my n- "my name is Joseph and this is Alice." Shit. I stay silent. Joseph, I hope you know what you're doing.
I survey the area, it looks the same. The footprints from earlier are still here. There doesn't seem to be any distinct changes or any additional footprints. It seems as if Fin and I were the only ones here today. Fin reaches down before he has a chance to grab whatever is next to him. I draw my makeshift bow and move from behind Joseph.
"I'm just getting my drink is all. You guys should take a seat."
"No, we're fine," Joseph says as he surveys the area. I see his eyes switch from left to right as he looks at the land. Joseph's eyes meet with the makeshift home. He stumbles back due to the sheer amazingness of the building. The two-story home that would take me years to build stands tall casting a shadow in the sand.
I'm still amazed at how he would have done this. This level of architecture takes time, precision, and a high level of education. Just where did he come from?
"If you're wondering how I built that, it took a broken toe and finger. A makeshift ladder, and a whole lot of chopping. I'm very proud of it, I'm thinking of adding a balcony soon on the second floor."
Joseph walks ahead, his jaw clenches. "Are you alone?" Joseph shouts. His booming voice causes me to tremble. I stay tucked behind Joseph, whose arms are extending covering me from the guy's view. I see him look at me, his eyes trail down at my bare thighs then to my feet.
A shiver covers my body. The way he looks at me feels like a predator staring at their next prey.
"Yes, I'm all alone. No one is here." Joseph's body becomes less tense, the muscles that were once flexed are back to their normal state.
"How do we know you're not lying," I peep.
He raises his hands, "look around. There's no one here."
"Just because no one is here now doesn't ax out the idea they exist. How are we supposed to know if they're hiding somewhere waiting to kill us?" I've seen things like this in movies. The bad guy says there's no one waiting for us and boom. We're surrounded and then we quickly die.
A silence befalls us, sweat begins to creep up on my neck. We have two weapons pointed directly at him, if there is someone here. We'll at least take him, at least one is alright. This means I won't go out without a fight.
"You don't," he answers. "But, I can assure you I am alone. Think about it Alice, I know you're smart. How many beds did you see in the house?"
"One," I answer.
