Chapter 2

Joseph sits in front of me, he stares ahead as we paddle in a synchronized motion towards what I assume back to land. "Are you sure this was the right way?" I question Joseph as we continue paddling. I was so shaken up that when Joseph yelled to paddle. I did as I was told without any warrant of what was going on.

But, as I look at the vast ocean, there's no way we could be going the right way. At our speed, if we were going the right way, we would have been at the docks by now. Joseph's eyebrow twitches, "I'm sure!" he snaps quickening his peddling. I match his speed, I can no longer feel my arms. We've been peddling for most of the night, never stopping.

"How?"

"I'm just am!"

He's just is? I stand in the boat, "how? You don't have a map, a compass, you're going based on what? Luck! If you were so fucking sure we would have been back by now. Or at least saw a coast guard," I snap. We've been in the ocean paddling for hours! We were only sailing on the boat for what? An hour, an hour and a half. Max! We should be back by now, or at least have met up with someone, anyone for that matter!

"No, not luck! I'm going on based on what direction the boat was going."

The boat was going in a circle. "What!" I yelp. "Don't tell me-"

"No, princess. I did not go in the same direction as the boat, I went the opposite. You know... towards the docks."

"Shit! You idiot, why didn't you tell me that sooner. We were going in a big circle!"

"Huh? A circle..."

"Yes a circle," I make a circle shape in the sky. "When people usually yacht they tend to go in a circle! This means, that we did, go the wrong way! And may I add we've been going this direction all fucking night! We're lost!" I scream stomping my foot. The boat shakes a bit.

Joseph raises his arms, "Alice!"

We're lost in the middle of the ocean. We're going to die, I'm going to die of dehydration if I don't have a heart attack first!

"What!" I stomp my foot again. "Because of you we-" A wave hits the boat flipping us over. "Fuck!" I yelp as we go down. Salty, it tastes of salt. The water fills my throat, I can't breathe. I need to get to the surface.

I kick my legs. My arms start to move on their own as I ascend to the surface. I spit the water out and air fills my lungs. "Joseph! Joseph!" I shout as I look around the vast ocean for the man I'm stuck with. I trot water, to help stay afloat. I can't see that far, the waves blind me.

"Here!" he shouts! "I'm over here," he raises his hand. One hand is raised high while the other one grasps the boat. Our lifeline, the only way we could possibly have a chance as to surviving out here.

I swim towards him, "help me flip the boat," Joseph orders. Joseph and I trot next to one another, to try to keep our heads above the water. I can't fight the waves much longer. Any longer and it'll surely take me away. I grasp the edge of the boat before we count to three. On three he nods, then the boat flips right side up. We take hast, getting back into the boat. "You idiot," he coughs. "You flipped the boat!"

"You're acting as if I meant to do that!"

"Seems like it, who the hell stomps around a boat of this size!"

I ring out my hair, while Joseph unbuttons his shirt. This small gesture does nothing to help my body that is soaking wet. If dehydration doesn't kill us. This hypothermia will, from this ocean breeze. His blazer which he took off-hours ago, is now drifting somewhere in the sea, nowhere to be found.
