Chapter 7
Charlie looks down at us in the hole, his barking hasn't stopped for what I assume is hours. The sun that was once at it's highest peaks has now been replaced with the orange rays indicating it's almost night time.
Joseph's face is sour, I feel the heat of his anger radiating onto me. But, he hasn't said a single audible sentence to me. And neither have I, it's not my fault that we're both down here.
I bet the fish has gone bad, we don't have any ice to put it on and fish can't stay out in 90-degree heat without going bad. Dinner is going to be Mangos again...well if we get out that is.
I look up, "the fish has gone bad."
"No shit," he mutters. "Doesn't take a degree to figure that out." This situation is pretty shitty but being a dick is uncalled for.
"God, you're annoying," I proclaim.
"I'm annoying?! You're one to talk, Alice." His breathing becomes rabid, most likely due to his anger.
I put my hands on my hips. He calls me annoying!? How dare he! "What's that supposed to mean?"
He throws his arms up, "your constant... being you! Your whole being is annoying. All you do is lay in the sand and play!"
"Play?! Are we forgetting for the last few days I was making that damn net so you can catch some damn fish or are we just forgetting that? I! Have been making sure we survive. If it was up to you we would be starving, without water and probably dead by now!"
Joseph sucks in his breath and turns away from me. "Whatever," he mutters.
My nose flares, Joseph you bastard. I grab his shoulder turn him back towards me. "You know what! I'm tired of this Joseph!"
Joseph rolls his eyes, "me too."
"God! I can't wait to get off this goddamn island and get the hell away from you!"
"Ditto," he comments.
"Do you always have to have the last word," I sneer looking up at the hole. Joseph looks up at the hole as well.
Joseph remains silent, probably due to him being sick of arguing. We need to figure a way out of this hole or we're going to die down here.
I grab onto the dirt, "I tried that already."
I scoff, of course, he did. That's probably the first thing he attempted to do. The hole isn't that deep, maybe around ten feet deep, give it take. Maybe if he gave me a boast or something then I could get out and attempt to get him out too.
"Hey Joseph, give me a boast. I'll try to climb out and then pull you out."
He scoffs, "that's not going to work. Look at you! You can barely carry a few coconuts."
"Shut up," I argue. "This is our best chance to get the hell out of this hole."
"Alice, I'm probably a good fifty pounds heavier than you, I'm telling you it won-"
Why is he always so fucking negative! "Well, I understand that but this is our only fucking chance to get the hell out of this hole Joseph! Now stop bitching and give me a goddamn boast!" I shout. not letting him finish his statement.
If he thinks, I'm going to just sit here and let him shut down every single one of my ideas. He has another thing coming.
Joseph mutters something to himself that I can't quite hear. He crouches in front of me. I take a step onto his hands, he grunts lowly. Is he trying to, keep calm Alice. Joseph gives me a boost upwards. I'm able to pull myself out. Freedom! Charlie barks and wags his tail in front of me as I crawl out.
I lay on my stomach when my entire body gets out of the hole. I feel Charlie's small paws tap my shoulder. Sweet, sweet freedom. "Hey!" Joseph yells from the hole behind me. "If you're done doing whatever the hell you're doing. I would really appreciate it you got me the hell out of this hole now."
Right, him. I have to get Joseph out as well. I turn and look down into the hole. "Okay Joseph," I extend my hand down into the hole. "Grab my hand," I close my eyes. I hope my arm won't be pulled from its socket. I feel Joseph grab my hand, now all I have to do is pull.
Alice, just pull! I pull at Joseph's arm as hard as I can. "Shit," he mutters. My eyes close and I feel like I'm not breathing. Come on adrenaline! Please kick in so I call pull this bastard out of this hole. I continue to pull, "you damn idiot. You're too weak to do this! I should have been the first one out."
I'm too weak?! I'm an idiot! Look who the hell is talking! I grit my teeth and continue to pull at Joseph. I step back, and more and more of his arm comes from the hole.
"Yes! I'm finally out," Joseph gleams. I fall to the ground in a huff. I did it, I pulled him out. How? I have no idea.
I fall onto my back, the cool night air covers my barely dressed body. "Yeah, I don't know how I did it but..."
"Oh you didn't," he corrects me. What? "You lifted me maybe for about five seconds."
"Wha- how did you?"
"I kicked in a small hole and leaped out of the hole using that."
"So you didn't need me?"
"No," he simply says. "It seems I didn't need you at all. But thanks, for trying." Joesph walks off towards our campsite leaving me on the ground with my heaving chest. "I'm glad you at least tried Alice. I'm sorry you're tired but your efforts did help me. You're amazing," I mutter in a Joseph-like tone.
I stand up from the ground and follow the same path Joseph went on. As I arrive at our makeshift base. Joseph stands tall with his hands on his hips, inspecting the bed I made. He nods his head in approval. "This looks good. Seems like you did do something useful. How long before you make my bed?"
"Maybe a day," I begrudgingly answer.
"Good," he says. He looks down at the fish. "Well these things have gone bad," he sighs. "Where are the mangos?" I take a seat on my makeshift mattress bed. I reach over and grab some mangos. I hand one to him and I begin to eat one myself.
Joseph and I stare up at the sky. When will someone come and get us? It's already been fifteen days and not a single plane has flown across the island or come close to us. How long are we going to stay here?
I take a look at Joseph whose laying on his back on the warm sand. Hopefully, for not much longer because I just might lose my mind if this goes on.
I hope you guys enjoyed the chapter! Expect another tomorrow!
I hope you all have a super, amazing, splendid, day, night, evening and afternoon.
