Chapter 17

I sit across from Finn, with Joseph close by my side. The chicken that I caught from earlier sits in between us with a series of can goods on the table. Some of them are open-peas, beans, corn, and pasta that I haven't eaten since I was a kid.

I hold back my salvation as I stare at the food. "So, Finn, I never asked before, but where are you from?" Joseph asks.

"Ohio."

Ohio? Beautiful beaches, great water parks. "Ohio? Interesting, so you're from the east coast?"

"Midwest," he corrects me. "It's a difference," he adds. Finn grabs his fork and stabs into his food.

I cock my eyebrow, "so you are...I mean, you were in the Navy. What made you join?"

"Well, it's simple. I didn't have enough interest or money to go to college. Every year, a few army guys used to come to my school, but I never paid much attention until I was on my own. They offered stability, room, board, and money, so I took it."

"Well, that sucks. You had no goals in life, so you decided to serve our country instead."

"Well...I wouldn't say that. It's a bit more complicated." He chuckled. Joseph kicks my foot under the table. He sends a glare towards me. What!? I was just saying what was on my mind. I step on his foot; he muffles the pain of my foot pressed on his own. He holds the table to subside the pain. "Is everything alright?"

"Yes, I just had some sand on my foot," I smile. "Nothing for you to worry about."

Finn takes a bite of a nearby apple. "So, where are you two from?"

"We both live in New York, different parts. Alice is in college right now studying civil engineering at NYU. While I'm an investor with a large portion of Wall Street."

"An NYU student and investor who were shipped wrecked during yachting. You guys must be loaded."

I side-eye Joseph, he's telling him too much. "Not really," I laugh off. I don't want this guy to know every little thing about me, especially me being a billionaire's daughter, a billionaire who lacks empathy for lower-class people.

"No need to be coy. It doesn't exactly matter if your rich or not. Money means nothing on the island. But an engineer?" Finn looks to me and smiles. "That could be handy. I've built a few things, but it's probably nothing compared to what you would have done."

Is he serious? This place is fantastic. "I wouldn't say that. This place is well made and thought out."

"Oh, you should see it when there's a typhoon. I have these makeshift bowls to catch the water. No matter how many layers of straw I add, water always leaks through. I can't figure out what to do."

The problem is that no matter how much a straw he adds, there's always going to be a crack. "You need to add a layer of mud. Mud is very similar to clay. You put a layer in that on top of the roof and let it dry under the sun for a few days, and you shouldn't have another leak."

The corner of Finn's lips began to perk up. "Wow, I wish you were here with me these last few years. You could have prevented a few colds and temper tantrums I had." Well, of course, it would have been better. I'm glad someone appreciates me. "But wow, a real engineer, I once had a friend who was an engineer."

"Really? What kind?"

"I don't remember what type but I knew they were an engineer. He used to be into computers and stuff."
